The computation of the South African election results is almost final, ladies and gentlemen. With 99.33% of the results in, these are the top 12 South African parties from that result. The major news is the ANC’s failure to reach 50%, meaning it has to govern with others, and Jacob Zuma’s cinematic rise in KwaZulu-Natal, which the youth have jokingly renamed KwaZuma-Natal. As I said in April when I penned a piece on Jacob Zuma that went viral, KZN was a must-win and a very important province for the ANC, without which it can't govern alone. It is four times the size of the Zimbabwean economy, so Zuma will be governing a province four times the size of the Zimbabwean economy. The second biggest piece of news is Zuma’s catalytic victory in KZN, which helped stop the ANC. It is an open secret that Jacob Zuma is willing to work with the ANC as long as Cyril Ramaphosa is gone. This might mean Ramaphosa’s departure from the ANC or an alliance to govern with the DA, which the markets desire. However, that might also mean the slow death of the ANC if it can't implement any meaningful radical public affairs changes due to the conservative nature of the DA’s neoliberal politics. The third piece of news is the EFF’s failure to grow in this election. It is at 9.47% with 99.33% of the results in, down from 10.80% in 2019, meaning it has lost votes compared to 2019. With proper reorganisation it remains a potent political force in the South African political ecosystem. The remaining results won’t make much of a difference to the big players, it is all over, the fat lady has sung!
