This might look romantic, but from what I've read about smoothbox crabs, their gestures are anything but romantic or protective. Some males are known to imprison young females until they are mature enough to reproduce. Once the females molt, the males copulate with them and then leave immediately in search of another female. Before departing, they ensure the female’s shell has hardened so that no other crab can mate with her and threaten their newly deposited genetic material.🤷🏻‍♀️
