Small but seriously tough, the snow bunting is built for extremes 💪 But not even this plucky passerine can survive an Arctic winter 🥶 They swap their white plumage for sandy-coloured beachwear, looking right at home on a winter getaway to our coasts! 👙 Simon Hastings 📸

A sausage ground beetle! 🪲 It's named for the marks on its wing cases - like strings of little sausages 🌭 Its thin head and mouthparts are perfectly adapted to butcher snails from inside their shells, pulling out the remains for a tasty meal. Escarg-ew! 🐌🗼 Ben Moore 📸

Channeling my inner snowdrop when bracing the outdoors today 🥶 Dainty flowers 🫷 Lean, mean, ice-busting machines 🙂‍↕️ Their leaves have hardened tips that help them push through frozen ground, & antifreeze proteins that stop ice crystals forming & causing damage 💪

If you look really closely, you might see some turkeytail fungus on this tree… 😅 A colourful fungus, it was once popular as a table decoration; at one time, it was even used to decorate hats! 🎩 Rachael Wayland 📸
