I will say one more thing on spygate before I go on holiday. I don’t blame William Salt. I genuinely feel sorry for him. Leave him alone and let him get on with his life and career. It’s not his fault and he’s been dragged through the mud in the name of Southampton football club. He was asked to do something he believed was part of his job. I’m incredibly sorry for Southampton supporters who had some joy in their life, who were proud of their club and the team for getting to the play off final. As fans we all know that feeling and why we cherish it and stick with our teams through thick and thin. Yes some reacted with defiant humour but see the world through someone else’s eyes and ask what would you have done? The blame for this scandal is not theirs. They wanted to believe in their club, their tribe and stayed loyal. That’s what fans do. They were failed #saintsfc

The constant re-litigating of football on and off the pitch - from VAR reversals to FFP breaches and arbitration squabbles - is excellent business for people like Nick and Lord Pinnick but toxic to the long term fan experience

If it’s perfectly acceptable and permitted to observe another team training 73 hours prior to a match, I cannot understand how it’s expulsion, up to £200m in lost revenue, and a 4 point deduction for doing it 72 hours prior to a match.

@IamBalhamMatt Fouling a good player is at worst gamesmanship, that has existed in football from its inception I’m sure. That and breaking the rules watching how teams prepare to play you do not have any parallels whatsoever.

The rules are the rules. The severity of the punishment is the point.

@stechap2010 @shnurgmeister Doing it 73 hours before training all season to every opponent is a £200k fine for Leeds. They broke the “good faith” regulation.
A new rule was added after that specifically for 72 hours before and that punishment is expulsion, points deduction and £200m.
