The current push by the Taliban to control Afghanistan's consulates in Europe, most visible in Germany, is a classic Trojan Horse operation. Thankfully the moral and human rights aspect of this operation is strongly voiced by the @EUparliament, @UNHumanRights and members and our human right defenders. I highlight its broader policy aspects. By threatening to invalidate passports and refusing to process paperwork (with no legal ground) the Taliban has forced some of the European govt into a transactional trap. But European security agencies are beginning to realize the catastrophic trade-offs of this "pragmatic" compromise: 1- Infiltration- Placing Taliban's hand-picked envoys and their vetted "technical staff" inside European capitals gives an extremist, sanctioned regime a physical base of operations. These individuals are not bound by Western background checks and answer directly to Kandahar. 2- When the Taliban controls the consular databases, they own the biometric data, home addresses, and family trees of every Afghan diaspora, exiles and asylum seekers living in Europe. This creates a massive internal security blind spot: a UN sanctioned violent extrimst entity can now actively spy on, extort, or threaten residents within European borders. They can use this as tool for transnational tepression and blackmail. 3- For the Taliban, these so called technical arrangements or accepts a Taliban-appointed official is nothing but a hostile takeover. The "Fatah" propaganda machine at Kandahar broadcasts it internally as a triumph of their ideology over Western values.
