In the reading, “Struggles many and great” the part where it discusses how black artistic community was short lived, made me think and question. Why wasn’t African Americans put onto display for a longer period? Where they better depictions ?
“For the American Negro artist who can escape the restrictions the more advanced among his own group… going outside his race, and even among the better classes with their “white” culture and conscious American manners
This painting by Devan Shimoyama reminds me of getting my haircut for graduation or an important event. Whenever there’s a nice event where I need to look sharp a haircut is needed. #arth287artoninsta
This painting reminds me of summer because of the cookout scenery depicted. You have a grill with hamburgers and hot dogs and the color scheme gives off a summer vibe. #arth287artoninsta
@anna_like_ana I like your question about the codes and the symbolism behind it. The use of patters of shapes and designs formed with spray paint shows a unique form of art
Loved this piece by Sanford Biggers. It is made of an antique quilt, textiles, acrylic paint, and spray paint. I asked him about the symbolism of its name - the Codes. #ARTH287ArtonInsta
Hank Thomas' work left me curious. His Polaroid has no caption, and so I want to know the meaning of this work, if there is one. The blur of colors and white area piercing through the piece caught my eye. #ARTH287ArtonInsta
I liked how this portrait engages on this person. The colors compliment her and the theme with the composition filled with designs that bring out a sense of light. #arth287artoninsta
I like how the backdrop and foreground displays mountains, clouds as the man is looking over standing on top of the rock. Seems like she’s engaging, trying to discover his path #arth287artoninsta
This exhibit showcases the realism of African American with a portrait of life. The man seems to have different perspectives shown with the two shades of color. #arth287artoninsta
Sanford biggest display of art in this exhibition showed the creativiy of his work and how important African Americans are and should be honored more often. The artist seems to make the ashes of these people into reality. #arth287artoninsta
@Makayla9032@kehindewileyart I love your comment about the emergence of something new. I agree, both pieces give a spring feeling with the flowers and combination of colors
I chose these pieces by @kehindewileyart because I felt that they represented spring with their use of brighter colors and flowers. I thought they both symbolized the emergence of something new, which is kind of similar to how I think of spring. #arth287artoninsta
These images remind me of spring because of their vibrant colors that signify a hopeful tone that spring conveys after winter. Kara Walker's image has flowers, an identifying trait of spring, while Vernon's more abstract image has some small pictures of fields. #arth287artoninsta
I picked this photo because it reminds me of myself with the hair and spring break. To me it represents a black man, knowing his worth and is comfortable in his skin. #arth287artoninsta
I picked this painting because it remind me of spring with the colors being used . The bright colors with plant like objects gives a feel of spring. The use of composition and purple is seen. #ARTH287ArtonInsta
Sadie Barnette’s exhibit expresses simple parts and moments of childhood, family, and growing up. The simple photo of a piece of toast on a plate, a happy birthday cake and a family photo show the simplicity that lies within life but can be translated to art. #ARTH287artoninsta
Sadie Barnett’s was a solo show at Jessica Silverman’s titled “Sadie Barnette: Inheritance.” It outlines the trauma of the world, what we’re leaving behind for people to inherit, and thinking of the good and bad of being passed from generation to generation. #arth287artoninsta
Nina Chanel Abney’s project on family ties, contributing to “Matisse Alive” is displayed as a group exhibition. It’s offers a unique view along with other artists to understand and explore masterpieces through a modern image of family and growth #arth287artoninsta
