But current rules need fundamental reform: •Revenue-based limits that account for owner investment •Equal treatment regardless of historical commercial advantages •Regulations that encourage competition, not entrench monopolies •Transparent enforcement that doesn't favor accounting creativity over sporting investment Villa & #NUFC aren't demanding to "replace the elite" - we're demanding the right to compete with them. The current system ensures that remains impossible. His article concludes that "sport decided by chequebook is not sport at all." He's absolutely right. But sport decided by spreadsheets and accounting loopholes isn't sport either - it's a rigged game masquerading as competition. The last time Aston Villa played in Europe's elite club competition, it was 1983 and it was called the European Cup. And that’s what makes their journey, and agonisingly valiant exit, all the more remarkable. Villa fans did not take one moment of their campaign for granted. For each of Villa Park’s six home matches against Europe’s elite, the stadium was transformed into a claret colosseum, municipal tifo displays dressed in the fog of fireworks. Bayern Munich, Bologna, Juventus, Celtic, Club Brugge and PSG all came, and all bar Juventus tasted defeat on the night. And yet it was the Villa’s most striking victory, a 3-2 win against PSG - Ligue 1 champions, on a 16-match away winning run - after going two goals down, that broke Villa hearts the most. Villa could not find that fourth goal, and departed the Champions League losing 5-4 on aggregate to their formidable French opponents. Villa’s European dream is over for this season, but the memories of 2024/25 will only inspire more.
