Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was born today in 1903. She spent her life breaking the colonial machine. She saw the British Raj as a system for stealing land and labour. In 1926, she ran for a legislative seat. This was a tactic to show the worker that these rooms were built to keep them out. She didn't want a seat at the table. She wanted to saw the legs off it. She founded the Congress Socialist Party to stop the revolution from being sold out to local bosses. Her salt raids were not just protests. They were direct strikes against the laws that turn the earth into private profit. She was the first woman the state arrested for this. They feared the hand that produces its own life without their permission. She built handlooms and cooperatives. This was a war against the factory that turns a person into a cog. She knew that reclaiming the craft was reclaiming the means of production. She warned that independence is a lie if it only swaps a white master for a brown one. A flag is just a rag if the people are hungry and the land is still fenced. She demanded a total reorganisation of society for collective need. We don't celebrate her with statues. We celebrate her by putting our shoulders to the wheel of history until the axle snaps. The socialists and communists who were the first to disappear into the night and fog. The Jehovah's Witnesses and Black people. With fascism once again on the rise across the West, the state’s performance of memory is a hollow hypocrisy. We do not seek a shared memory with a ruling class that maintains the same logic of exclusion and border violence today. We must ensure that Never Again is Never Again for everyone.
