I have landed my dream job. I’ve just accepted a position at Harmonic, a Palo Alto startup applying AI to formal mathematical reasoning. Harmonic’s Aristotle formal reasoning model achieved Gold Medal level performance at this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). I will work on exploring applications of Aristotle to the formal verification of hardware. This job is a perfect intersection of hardware design and verification, functional programming, formal methods and machine learning, bringing together several threads of my career so far. The beauty of asking an AI to generate a proof for a lemma (e.g. a formal property about a circuit) is that it can be checked by an external interactive theorem prover (like Lean) to establish whether the AI’s output is actually correct. This is an awesome superpower! harmonic.fun @HarmonicMath

I was torn about posting this, but other founders said I should. This is what female founders — who create a lot of value and still have our work devalued — have to put up with

Best show from last 5 years that isn’t Succession, Silo or Severance (all of which I loved)? After one of my most insanely hectic weeks ever, I need some downtime.

@prof_grimmer Well, Gemini 2.5 Pro got it. Though, in the chat history, I did ask it about the slice problem first (which it got), and then projection.

I've invented a simple, lovely math puzzle I expect every AI fails: Suppose you're a mathematical sailor at sea on a boat that has a perfectly cylindrical hole in the floor. All you brought is a collection of every p norm ball except p=2 (drat!). What do you do to save yourself?

@prof_grimmer Oh, so what would qualify? Has to have a circular-conical or cylindrical tangent?

@RahulAPanicker That older puzzle is a good warm up for this one but not sufficient. Cutting a 4-norm gets you a flat circular face but that isn't sufficient to plug a hole properly... :)

This is a very inspiring weekend read. At 33, @PThorpe92 has now spent 1/3rd of his life in jail, and a quarter of that in solitary confinement, but today, thanks to some amazing programs in Maine, he works full-time as a software engineer for database company Turso while still in jail, paying 10% of his wages to the state. When Preston was 20, he went to jail for selling MDMA and Marijuana he bought on the dark web. He went to jail for a few years, got out with $0 and not many options and fell back into crime. By chance, he got transfered to Maine, the only state that lets inmates study for college while in jail. Preston studied remotely at the University of Maine Augusta and became obsessed with programming and ended up becoming a volunteer contributor to an open source project that led to a full-time job. Those that take college courses while in jail in Maine have a recidivism rate of 0.5%, compared to ~68% nationwide (3 year recidivism rate). Highly recommend reading the article, and even better his blog posts linked below.

@chris_j_paxton Hardware doesn’t support. Need to use other means like policy over ethernet (not onboard), and wired power with estop.
