Yes, malaria mosquitoes also bite in daylight, and bed nets may not be enough for disease prevention ~ New study shows some 15% of biting by the main malaria mosquitoes in Tanzania happen during the day indoors and outdoors; a significant protection gap in current nocturnal-focused malaria control measures We investigated the biting patterns of the major malaria mosquitoes Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus to uncover risks beyond nighttime. While insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) target nocturnal bites, the study found that about 15% of bites occur during the day, coinciding with common activities like chores and playing. Mosquitoes were active both indoors and outdoors at different times. Additionally, malaria parasites were present in both day and night biters. These findings suggest ITNs alone are insufficient, highlighting the need for additional control measures and better community education to reduce malaria transmission effectively. The study was led by Imy colleague Muwonge Mukisa, staff of Uganda' Ministry of Health, who wrote his master thesis with us at @ifakarahealth under the auspices of @pamcafrica , ~ Mukisa et al 2024: Analysis of the 24-h biting patterns and human exposures to malaria vectors in south-eastern Tanzania: parasitesandvectors.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
