Kenya congratulates the Republic of Sierra Leone on its successful election to the United Nations Security Council as a Non-Permanent Member for the 2024-2025 term. This achievement reflects Sierra Leone's commitment to global peace and security, and we commend its leadership in advancing the reform of the UN Security Council as the current Chair of the African Union Committee of 10 (C-10). I take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to H.E. Ms. Isatu Aminata Bundu, outgoing High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Kenya, for her exemplary service and tireless efforts in representing not only her country but also the broader African agenda on the global stage. Furthermore, I am pleased to acknowledge the enduring and cordial relations between Kenya and Sierra Leone, a partnership built on mutual respect, shared values, and historical solidarity. I particularly commend your pivotal role in facilitating the highly successful State Visit of His Excellency President @PresidentBio to Kenya. This visit was a significant milestone in our bilateral relations, resulting in the signing of key Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding. These include important frameworks for Political and Diplomatic Consultations, Trade and Investments, Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, Wildlife Conservation and Tourism Development, as well as Culture, Arts, and Youth Affairs.

I delivered the #SaLone statement at the #UNGA High-level meeting on “Addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise”. This poses a grave challenge to state integrity, community security, and millions of livelihoods. Bold #ClimateAction is needed now @PresidentBio

I was thrilled to deliver a statement during the epoch-making signing ceremony for the USD$480 million @MCCgov Energy Compact. As I mentioned, access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity goes beyond merely illuminating homes or powering industries; it serves as the catalyst for growth, stimulates innovation, and helps lift communities out of poverty. I extend my earnest gratitude to the Government and people of the United States and the @MCCgov for their invaluable support. My Government is fully dedicated to ensuring the effective implementation of this Compact.

It was a profound honor to deliver the Keynote Address at the high-level dinner marking the prohibition of child marriage in Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, girls have a champion in @FirstLadyBio whose “Hands Off Our Girls” initiative has immensely contributed to the protection and wellbeing of young girls. I extend my gratitude to the remarkable First Ladies of OAFLAD for their outstanding leadership and dedication in forging an important alliance for girls and women.

In my address to the Foreign Ministers of the Africa Union’s C-10 and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, I affirmed that a reformed Security Council, in which Africa has a permanent voice, will not only better equip it to respond to global crises but also bring a fresh perspective and unique insights to the table. As coordinator of C-10, I stated our resolve to remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that Africa, with its 1.4 billion people, is granted the representation it rightly deserves in the highest decision-making body on matters of international peace and security.

Today, at the high-level meeting of G7+ countries, on the margins of the 79th Session of the UN general Assembly, I registered the progress we have made in advancing the interests of fragile states on the theme ”Peace in the World and Peace in the g7+ Countries: Shared Challenges and Solutions.” As we reflect on the outcomes of the UN Summit of the Future and the adoption of the "Pact for the Future," we must be mindful that the vision we seek for “a world free from conflict and instability” demands coordinated action.

At this 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Debate, I reiterated the urgent need for the reform of the United Nations Security Council. This critical reform will enhance Africa’s effective representation. Addressing contemporary global security challenges requires the collective wisdom and cooperation of all nations, not just the privileged few or the most militarily or economically powerful.

On the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly, I engaged in a constructive discussion with Ajay Banga, President of the @WorldBank Group. Our dialogue focused on enhancing energy access, tackling food insecurity, augmenting budget support, and promoting women's empowerment. I commend the World Bank President for the significant reforms he is spearheading and for the new Global Challenge Programs, which align with my Government's Medium-Term National Development Plan (2024-2030). As a designated champion of the IDA21 advocacy, I am committed to advocating for a more robust IDA21 replenishment.

I co-chaired the interactive dialogue 2 of THE SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE on: "Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security”. Our world is faced with extraordinary challenges for which we require collective action and meaningful multilateral partnerships. It is critical to reform the UN Security Council to reflect the present geopolitical realities so that Africa receives equitable and effective representation. We must also deepen collaboration, pool resources, and strengthen our commitment to using multilateral approaches, peacekeeping, diplomacy, and humanitarian interventions.

At the plenary of the United Nations Summit of the Future, I had the privilege of addressing the assembly on behalf of the g7+ countries—nations connected by the shared experiences of conflict and challenges of fragility. In my remarks, I emphasized six critical areas for positioning the g7+ countries within the framework of the Pact for the Future implementation: 1️⃣ National ownership and inclusive governance 2️⃣ Promoting sustainable development 3️⃣ Fostering international peace and security 4️⃣ Embracing science, technology, innovation and digital cooperation 5️⃣ Empowering youth as agents of change 6️⃣ Transforming Global Governance and Reforming the UN Security Council Together, let us commit to creating a future where no country is left behind, guided by the principles of equity, solidarity, justice, and peace.

*Security Council High-Level Open Debate on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace - 21st August 2024* “Sierra Leone reaffirms its commitment to the principles of the New Agenda for Peace, emphasizing the importance of addressing inequality and ensuring that multilateralism remains the cornerstone of global peace efforts”. H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, highlighted the need for preventive diplomacy, robust peacekeeping, and sustained peacebuilding, as well as the importance of national ownership in these processes. Sierra Leone’s experience with conflict prevention and peacebuilding serves as a testament to the power of national ownership and inclusive governance. Sierra Leone’s recovery from a decade-long civil war demonstrates the significance of addressing root causes of conflict, such as economic marginalization and political exclusion. At the regional and global levels, Sierra Leone continues to contribute to peace and security through active engagement in the United Nations Security Council and regional bodies like ECOWAS and the African Union. The emphasis on localized and context-specific strategies remains critical in addressing diverse conflict scenarios, and Sierra Leone calls for early action and response mechanisms that address root causes before they escalate. As the President of the United Nations Security Council, I have the honour to preside over a historic debate on the reform of the UN Security Council. I spoke as a representative of a Continent that has long been underrepresented in the Council that shapes our world on matters of peace and security. Let me restate that the time for half-measures and incremental progress is over. Africa's voice must be heard, and its demands for justice and equity must be met. I thank the UN Secretary-General, H.E António Guterres, @antonioguterres, the President of the 78th Session of the @UN General Assembly, H.E Denis Francis, and Dr. Sithembele Mbete for their very insightful and thought-provoking briefings.
