Indra was really based in Vedas... Its a shame how later puranas tried to show him as a womanizer and someone who lacks leadership skills. So, theres this event in rigveda mandala 8 in which theres this woman Apala who had skin disease and how indra cured her disease. Apala was the daughter of a sage, but her life was difficult because she suffered from a skin disease. People avoided her and even her husband abandoned her because of it. She spent most of her time alone near forests and rivers. One day while wandering in the forest, she found a soma plant. Soma was considered sacred and was often offered to gods during rituals. Apala wanted to offer it to Indra, but she had no tools to prepare it properly. So she chewed the soma herself and collected its juice. Then she prayed to Indra and offered him the soma juice she had prepared. Indra accepted her offering. He was pleased by her sincerity and devotion, not caring about her appearance or condition. After accepting the offering, Indra cured her disease. Her skin became healthy again and she regained her strength and beauty.

The Vedas say that a widow should lie down next to the husband’s pyre and then raise and walk away.. the symbolism of this is it is a rebirth as a different individual and she leaves behind her role as a wife. The key evidence is the Eran inscription* of 510 CE, from the late Gupta/early post-Gupta period, which records the wife of a warrior named Goparāja ascending the funeral pyre after his death in battle. It is the only one. Earlier Sanskrit literature sometimes praises the devoted widow, but widow self immolation was not a Vedic requirement. In fact, older Vedic funeral ritual seems to have expected the widow to symbolically lie beside the dead husband and then rise and return to life, not die with him. *[..] Goparāja appears in the Eran pillar inscription, dated Gupta Era 191 = c. 510 CE, at Eran in Madhya Pradesh. He was a noble/chieftain and friend or associate of Bhanugupta, probably involved in a major battle during the unstable late Gupta period. The inscription says Goparāja died in battle and that his beloved wife “entered into the mass of fire,” which is why it is treated as one of the earliest dated epigraphic records of sati. But there are caveats. The inscription is damaged, and the word sati itself is not used; the modern classification comes from the description of the wife entering the fire and from Fleet’s reconstruction/translation. Could it be from another culture? Possibly partly, but not cleanly. Central India and northwestern India had long contact with Śakas/Indo-Scythians, Kuṣāṇas, Hūṇas, and other warrior-frontier groups. Eran itself had earlier Śaka links, and by c. 510 CE the Gupta world was under pressure from Hūṇa-related powers. Sati may have grown at the intersection of warrior death, honor culture, widow chastity ideals, property/inheritance anxieties, and frontier militarization. In Gupta-era evidence, it appears first as an elite kṣatriya/warrior memorial act, not a general Hindu rule. Older Vedic ritual, by contrast, seems to point the widow back to life, not into death. So Gupta sati looks less like ancient Vedic obligation and more like a later heroic-warrior custom that became Sanskritized and moralized over time. [..]

@DocherlaMahesh Buddha's criticism of caste was more so around the idea that not all varnas could attain moksha/nirvana as well as a small degree of Kshatriya-Brahmin rivalry. And how Brahmins (or anyone) were great by merit/action, not simply out of birth.

One of the most fascinating ancient 'anthropological' Indian texts comes from the Pali Canon. It is a discourse of Buddha on the evolution of Brahmins - the Brahmanadhammika Sutta. Buddha is visited by aged Kosalan Brahmins who ask him to compare the Brahmins of his time & those of old. He narrates who the Brahmins of old lived austere, restrained lives. Neither possessing cattle nor gold nor grain. He says, 'chanting was their money & grain, which they guarded as a gift from god.' He then describes their descent over time as greed entered their hearts. One of the most interesting aspects of this is that he claims it happened because they saw the rising wealth of the Rajas - perhaps a reference to the meteoric rise of city-states during that time & along with it the power of Kshatriya rulers. But the most interesting element of this tale is the sin that Brahmins committed that unleashed a calamity on the land. For unlike the Brahmins of old, the Brahmins of his time had begun to sacrifice cows. A crime that had garnered cries of terror from the not just the Devas or ancestors, but even the Asuras - demons. He goes on to claim that before there were only 3 illnesses - that of greed, starvation, and old age. But as blades fell on the necks of cows, these 3 maladies grew to 98. Even more interestingly, he goes on to describe how cow sacrifice was an ancient evil (though this isn't pointed at Brahmins). And how it has been criticized since ancient times. The coup de grâce of this Sutta though is the last catastrophe that fell upon society. The final verses describe how Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, & Shudras fragmented into multiple castes. Wives began to despise their husbands and people began mixing as varnashram unraveled...

One of the most consistent & egregious perversions of Indology is the idea that Brahmins & Sramans were in a multi-millennia civil war. Sramanic critique of contemporary Brahmins was either elite theological debate or criticisms for not upholding the way of the Vedas which had been deemed to have been twisted by contemporaries. This is without even going into the massive input & influence of Brahmins within Sramanic sects as well as Sramanic influences on Hindu sects.

Omg - someone tagged me on this thread by this Bhutanese neo-Buddhist supremacist. He is completely LYING by omission about what Bankim Chandra Chatterjee actually wrote about the so called Buddhist origin of Rath festival at Jagannath Puri. Notice how he has posted a snippet of Bankim Chandra quoting Cunningham - only until the line "In the Rath are near copies of Buddha Dhamma, and Sangha , and appear to have been modeled upon them." This gives the impression that Bankim Chandra agreed with Cunningham's conclusion and also believed the Rath Yatra had a Buddhist origin. But when I looked up the source quoted, the actual essay by Bankim Chandra, CLEARLY does not agree with that conclusion and says Cunningham's "evidence is by no means conclusive, and it is possible that the Buddhists themselves may have transformed an astronomical commemoration into a religious one"! Tenzing purposely left out that entire line and the discussion afterwards to completely change the entire context and make it look like Bankim Chandra was agreeing with Cunningham that Rath Yatra has a Buddhist origin - which he clearly was NOT. Moreover, Bankim Chandra suggests that the Rath Yatra originated as a Hindu summer solstice festival connected to the sun god, Surya, which corresponds to Makar Sankranti for winter solstice. According to him, the festival symbolizes the yearly motion of the sun where Surya travels to a certain point in the sky, remains there briefly, and then returns toward the equator. In Hindu legends Surya is shown riding in a chariot, or rath. Similarly, during the Rath Yatra, bhagwan Jagannath’s chariot moves to a destination, stays there for eight days, and then returns along the same route. Bankim Chandra also speculates that Jagannath was a more popular local form which gradually replaced Surya as the central deity of the festival. Considering Odisha’s deep historical reverence for Surya, especially through the famous Konark Sun Temple, Bankim Chandra's theory seems quite plausible. This is how they distort our history - deliberately omitting crucial points to change the context, confusing the readers and making up evidence to support their blatant lies that Hindus destroyed Buddhist places of worship. In the process they have zero shame in completely misrepresenting great scholars like Bankim Chandra, who cannot even protest against this blatant misrepresentation of his research. Such a fraud!

My heartiest blessings to you Madam. You are absolutely right. Sati, Savitri, Anasuya, Arundhati were all great examples of how a wife can support and protect their husbands and families. Today also, some women are there who are the pillars of their families. if some women are not like them, in my view, our Education system is responsible. We don't teach EHICS and MORALS any more as part of our curriculum.

How ignorant are you to mock Sati and Savitri as symbols of weakness or silent submission. Their names represent the most fearless and independent spirit. Both defied social expectation in choosing unconventional yet extraordinary husbands, and both confronted death itself with unyielding courage. Sati transformed her own body into an act of protest against the humiliation of Shiva, while Savitri challenged Yama through sheer will and spiritual strength until she forced death himself to restore her husband’s life. Their stories are not about passive obedience, but about conviction so powerful that it could stand against society, destiny, and even mortality. “Sati-Savitri” is the biggest compliment you could give.

"Ye sab log bahut nirdayi hain, mummy. Mera dum ghut raha hai yahan." "Maa, aap mujhe yahan se le jao, please." "Mera jeevan narak ho gaya hai, mummy." What will you do as a parent if your married daughter sends you such messages about harassment from her in-laws repeatedly every now and then? I'm sure all of you with daughters won't waste a second after receiving the first SOS message or call, and rescue her, but sadly, it doesn't happen so often in the offline world. Why? These messages were sent by Twisha Sharma to her mother, a woman who allegedly died by suicide in Bhopal due to alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws. The girl was well-educated and from an accomplished family. Why didn't the parents act after the first call for help? And mind you, I'm not blaming them for the outcome. The sole criminal responsibility for this alleged suicide lies only with the alleged harassers. I'm just pointing out the helpless social reality that many parents hesitate, delay, or keep hoping things will improve on their own, even families as well-educated and accomplished as Twisha's. Just sad. High time parents realise that a divorced daughter is always better than a dead daughter.

#InfiniteIndia | The Sati narrative was often distorted during colonial rule to malign India and its civilization. In the Ramayana and Mahabharata, countless women were widowed, yet widow burning was not the norm. Ancient Vedic traditions allowed widows to live with dignity and remarry, but selective interpretations were used by colonial Christian missionaries to defame India’s social heritage. One thing many NON MUSLIMS fail to understand is this: If Islam truly commanded Muslims to KILL non Muslims or attack people for not believing, you wouldn’t need to “detect extremists”. The entire Muslim population would already be doing it openly. Look at RAMADAN. When fasting is commanded, Muslims fast. Look at DAILY PRAYER. Muslims pray no matter where they are. Because when Islam makes something obligatory, practising Muslims take it seriously. So ask yourself this: Why are 99.9% of Muslims on earth NOT committing terrorism? Because TERRORISM is not Islam. A few misguided lunatics committing atrocities in the name of Islam do not represent 2 BILLION Muslims worldwide. Stop judging an entire religion by criminals who violate the very teachings they claim to defend.

Why do the Vedic Rishis describe a material noun such as Agni also as a proper noun and also an abstract? I will attempt to describe my understanding here It is because the Rishis have reached a unitary consciousness where the most impersonal is also deeply personal, a feeling is as Real as an object, perhaps even more so There is no duality here.
