In "Seinfeld" Season 4 “The Handicap Spot," the role of Frank Costanza was played by John Randolph. Randolph’s version of Frank was written to be quiet and henpecked, designed to contrast with the loud, domineering Estelle Costanza. Series creator Larry David decided to recast the part with Jerry Stiller for the Season 5 episode “The Puffy Shirt." Initially, producers asked Stiller to wear a bald cap and play the character as meek. However, after struggling with this direction during rehearsal, Stiller decided to shout back at his wife, played by Estelle Harris. Stiller's spontaneous yelling and intense physical delivery caused the entire cast and crew to laugh. David loved the change and encouraged Stiller to play the character with that unhinged energy, permanently altering the dynamic of the Costanza household. Because Randolph appeared in the Season 4 episode "The Handicap Spot," David later had the scenes re-shot with Stiller for syndication continuity. #Seinfeld #Costanza #FrankCostanza #JerryStiller #JohnRandolph
