🇲🇲 NEW: Myanmar’s military junta has escalated war crimes and crimes against humanity as it seeks to entrench its rule through repression and fraudulent elections, said @FortifyRights, @amnesty, and @hrw in a joint news release. Since the 2021 coup, the junta has killed thousands of civilians, carried out indiscriminate airstrikes on schools, hospitals, and displacement camps, detained more than 30,000 political prisoners, and intensified torture, forced conscription, and the use of drones, paramotors, and cluster munitions. “It’s no accident that this election has been made possible through increased human rights abuses, from arbitrary detention to unlawful attacks on civilians,” said @ejaz_minkhant, Human Rights Specialist at @FortifyRights. The groups urge U.N. Security Council members and governments in the region to take concrete steps to hold the junta accountable, including pursuing justice for crimes committed since the coup.
