TANGLES is an expressionistic adaptation of Sarah Leavitt’s profoundly personal graphic novel, exploring her queer love life, aspirations to be a professional illustrator, relationship with her parents, and her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Leah Nelson’s simple but effective black-and-white animation and direction bring a grounded emotional honesty to the adult material, aided further by heartfelt voice performances from Abby Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Bryan Cranston. Seth Rogen can feel a bit distracting at times, though his larger-than-life energy ultimately suits the character he’s playing. This is the kind of mature, emotionally evocative animated storytelling with a major Hollywood cast that we desperately need more of.
