When I worked at Sears in the early 90's, the people there built entire lives off those jobs.
The guy running appliances had three kids, coached little league every weekend, and retired after 32 years with a pension.
One of the women in customer service bought her first house working full-time there, and the older guy in hardware took the same vacation to the Ozarks every summer because he could actually afford to unplug for a week.
The managers knew everybody by name, the Christmas bonuses actually meant something, and the store was packed every holiday season because business was booming.
Nobody thought they were "stuck" working retail - it was honest work that paid enough to live with dignity.
Somewhere along the way, corporations started making record profits while the people keeping the place running could barely afford rent.
When exactly did a steady full-time job stop being enough to build a normal life?

Every Saturday morning I have breakfast with a bunch of old farmers.
Discussion today was population decline and replacement rate in the US.
They've come up with a very simple yet elegant solution to increase birth rates.

This young man was just driving around checking on his farm when he saw an older woman pulled over on the side of the highway with her hood up. He kept going at first, but something told him to turn around and check on her.
She was stranded, not from the area, and didn’t know what was wrong with her car. He got his work truck, came back, and quickly figured out it was a bad battery cable. He did a temporary fix right there so she could get back on the road.
When she tried to pay him, he told her not to worry about it — but she insisted. Instead of money, she gave him a plate of catfish from a cookout she had just come from.
Sometimes the best payment isn’t money at all.

I’m at my son’s highschool graduation. Sadly the vast majority of men are not wearing a coat and tie… many look like they’re dressed for the gym. When did this become the norm?

@WagnerNigggr @dandinohill I completely disagree. There are far more good loving people. They keep to themselves. They aren’t in the headlines. You only hear about the bad. Every outlet only tells you about bad things happening.
