@DBalloonBandit @conorleeson Condescending and wrong. Killed doesn't suggest he was intentionally murdered, that's why we have words such as murder and manslaughter. And no one is defending a criminal, but as we don't kill murderers and child rapists, surely, shoplifting is not a crime that warrants death.

This can't just be brushed under the carpet, folks. We saw a televised killing live on video. Absolutely unforgivable behaviour by a group of old thugs cosplaying as security guards. Licensed by the PSA? If not, why not? If so, what sanctions are available? 1/2

A Congolese man died in Dublin on Friday after he was restrained by several security guards in an alleged shoplifting incident – prompting widespread anger and calls for justice. Video of the incident showed several guards on top of Yves Sakila, 35, in Dublin city centre as he cried out in distress. At one point, a guard appears to kneel on his head or neck. He later appears to become unresponsive. Police are investigating. The footage has prompted comparisons with the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Local community members held a vigil on Tuesday, chanting “justice for Yves”. The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is demanding that the death be “swiftly, thoroughly and transparently investigated”.

I’m sat in my first Essex County Council meeting on Monday morning, listening to a councillor induction presentation. ‘Any questions?’ asks an officer. A hand goes up. ‘Yes’ says a recently elected Labour member. ‘Do I get a pension as a councillor?’. His first question was about how much money he gets.
