@JudasNumber1 @TheAthleticFC Didn’t we agree earlier that he was booked for the afters? It is funny to me that the crowd can rain bottles and insults down on him but if he flexes his shirt in response he’s out of control.

When it comes to Jose Mourinho's comments about Vinicius Junior alleging he was racially abused by a Benfica player, it is difficult to know where to start. But the line about Benfica legend Eusebio is as good a place as any. The idea that because the greatest player in the club’s history is Black, therefore nobody connected with them could possibly be racist, is at best surreal and absurd, at worst vicious gaslighting. Mourinho was, in effect, telling Vinicius that he didn’t hear what he says he heard — because there’s a statue of a black footballer outside Estadio da Luz. Then there’s the criticism of Vinicius for celebrating in what Mourinho deems to be an inappropriate manner. And then the killer, the repeated slur that is often aimed towards Vinicius. The implication that this is all his fault. “There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. Every stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens. Always.” This was a night that Jose Mourinho sunk to a new low, writes @NickMiller79. nytimes.com/athletic/70538…

@JudasNumber1 @TheAthleticFC I’m fine with him getting booked if it’s decided that’s the culture the game is in. Personally I think fans can suck up a player doing some goading. Players rarely get booked for celebrations in the Prem. So cultural difference I guess.

@SeanGillen22 @TheAthleticFC Lol ok. Humping a corner flag infront of fans while laughing at them (not with teammates), to the point where your teammate apologizes to the fanbase, practically embarrassed, is totally not provocative. Next, just give🖕🏻🖕🏻to the fans. What's the big deal?!

@JudasNumber1 @TheAthleticFC Yeah I'm still not having it. For me it wasn't that bad. For the most part any celebration in front of fans will piss them off and get a reaction. All part of the fun I'd say. Even though chucking stuff is silly, I think it would have passed without anyone being too bothered.

@SeanGillen22 @TheAthleticFC And also, again, rudiger apologizing to the fans says it all. Its disrespectful and done to illicit a response. But rudiger was Mourinho at that moment. Saying to vini- that was unnecessary. Grown men throwing shit stinks, but us Portuguese are a fiery people lol

@JudasNumber1 @TheAthleticFC Yes I think that’s what happened. They threw stuff at him and whistled him, he responded with some defiant flexing type thing. I really think in that situation the referee should just restart the game as soon as possible.

@SeanGillen22 @TheAthleticFC My understanding from the video was him still provoking the crowd after the dance that got him the yellow. Had a clear 2nd he shoulda got. Valverde shoulda been sent off. Carreras should be out next game. Ref was a disaster.

@JudasNumber1 @TheAthleticFC Yeah. Tbh the dance was nothing. I think we’re getting into a weird state where that gets you a yellow card. In England you’re not allowed to bring items such as bottles into the stadium. I always thought it was too strict but adults throwing them at players looks so pathetic.

A lot of conflation going on regarding Vinícius celebration and the alleged Prestianni racism. They were two separate incidents. Having been in the Estádio da Luz last night, and having watched and read the footage/reaction this morning, this is how I saw it. - Vinícius scores a worldy. He then celebrates in front of fans. A bit of to and fro. Referee ends up yellow-carding Vinícius, for provoking the crowd. You can argue one way or the other about that one. - Prestianni allegedly calls Vinícius a "monkey". The Argentine says he called him a "faggot". This is not difficult to analyse. If it is proved Prestianni did call Vinícius a monkey he should be punished in an exemplary manner. Both by UEFA and Benfica. - Mourinho's statement that "Benfica's biggest symbol is Eusébio so it's not a racist club" an unfortunate choice of words, to say the least. First of all it's basically the classic "I've got black friends so I'm not racist" senseless argument. Secondly, nobody accused Benfica of being racist. Prestianni is accused of being racist. - Benfica posting the video alleging Real Madrid players can't have heard what Presitanni said a terrible decision. Impossible to reach that conclusion from the images. If anything, Vinícius' immediate reaction to Prestianni muttering something under his shirt by running to the referee to inform him seems to vindicate what he claimed was said. - Mourinho and several Portuguese commentators mentioned the fact Vinícius has been involved in several similar cases. Irrelevant. If racism took place it should be condemned and punished accordingly.
