Leadership isn’t a title. It’s a practice. Like yoga, like music, like martial arts — leadership is about showing up, facing friction, and growing with others.

Cooper Flagg, 18, on why he reclassified to graduate high school in three years and position himself as the youngest No. 1 NBA Draft pick since LeBron James: “A quote my mom likes to say a lot: ‘If you’re the best player in the gym, then you need to find a new gym.’”

12 years ago I was sitting in a jail cell. Arrested for possession of a controlled substance and a broken man. I had a back injury years before that had spiraled into a debilitating addiction to pain pills and other pills. I had managed to go from coaching the sport I love, married to a beautiful woman with the best daughter I could ask for and the best family I can imagine to being alone. Alone in darkness. I had shattered every single relationship that mattered. Alone, a liar, a thief, a poor husband, a bad dad and a terrible friend. You see I lived in misery for several years. I was addicted but I wanted to stop. I wanted to stop so badly but as things spiraled out of control I just fell deeper into darkness. People tried to help me and I would have small bursts of sobriety but could never sustain it. I couldn’t sustain it because I HATED who I was and what I had done. I was filthy and undeserving of grace and mercy. But then March 15th came. I sat in that jail cell and knew I had to change or my daughter would grow up without a father. You see if you know me you know how much I love young people and none more so than Marlee Haines. Because of my actions I had lost time with her and it killed me. All I longed for was that daddy daughter relationship where I could be the man she needed. I had a man ask me “what would you do if your daughter married a man like you?” Woooo you talk about shattering me. He told me “your daughter will look to you for who a man is supposed to be!” She was still young enough I could change but the time had to be now. That’s when I sought the help I needed. I left that jail cell and headed to Water Valley MS where the Newman family changed my life. They showed me the grace and mercy I needed and slowly I began to pick the pieces back up again. I started to put one day on top of another and life got better. Marlee and I got closer and she healed me. She gave me the hope I needed and breathed life into me. The days of just me and her made life so much worth living. We became as she says “BFF’s”. I still carried a lot of guilt and shame for my past but a few years into recovery she had a school assignment to write about her “hero”. She chose me and it overwhelmed me. Why me? I had missed some time and been absent. I hadn’t been the father she needed early in her life. But I think she chose me because she saw what I overcame and had been honest and transparent in my recovery. My family also supported me so much and as time went on I was able to mend some fences and rebuild some relationships. Fast forward many years later and God opened another door for me. He gave me a second chance at coaching. Those boys I coached became my passion and my world. I knew I had a chance to help mold lives and build good men. I knew through my mistakes I could try and help them avoid the same pitfalls. My boys became my passion and those boys are still my passion today. Next to my family my players are my reason for living each day. I’m so blessed to have so many good young men I’ve been able to coach and watch grow up. I take such joy in who they are and how they attack life. Those kids truly breathe life into me every day. I’m so thankful for Heritage Academy Patriots and the leadership and families there who believed in me enough to give me a chance. I say it often but there’s no better place to be than Heritage Academy. The leadership, the families and the kids. I get to work alongside some amazing people everyday and every day I get to be with the kids I love and coach the sport I love. I’m not someone to be looked up to or admired. Im not a good man. I’m a man of many faults. I’m inpatient, ornery, struggle with tobacco, sometimes have a potty mouth, negative minded and many other faults. God deserves all glory and praise for my story. I hope my story of redemption and recovery can provide hope to others affected by addiction. Addiction is beast. It claims so many lives. But never lose hope!

I want to get in a time machine to go back to 1998 and try to convince people that in 2024 a near-60 year old Mike Tyson will be fighting a kid from Disney Channel over the world wide web via the company that rents DVDs via mail, broadcast by Rosie Perez.
