Rates of entrepreneurship in young people are lower in Ireland than anywhere else in the EU, and almost the entire world! With a highly skilled STEM-heavy population, that's a tragedy. The most likely culprits are low-risk, high-salary multinational jobs and mad house prices.

@danobrien20 What % of self-empd are young doesn't tell us much really I think. Table shows self-emp, total employers and self-emp in ICT or Prof Services (% of total employment). Ireland about avg and higher for ICT (Plus self-emp can be casualised employment as well as entrepreneurship)

Disappointing to see Ireland finish last in this league of twentysomething entrepreneurs. One reason could be because there are so many well paid jobs, which disincentivises going it alone, but worth deeper discussion. Thoughts welcome.

It's not just Siobhán. It's all 34 of them. Faceless ghosts, at least on the internet. Countless photos of the destruction on Talbot Street, Parnell Street, South Leinster Street, and North Road, Monaghan. Hardly any photos of the victims, as if they didn't exist at all.

@SineadOS1 This post has had tons of engagement based on your scoring of services/ infrastructure. The scores are 'striking' - Ireland has half the level of Greece and Bulgaria for example. You should post the sources and full methodology or take it down.

(RE this graph: I aggregated public infrastructure and services capabilities and weighted them, country by country, against each other, before plotting this against wealth per capita, and GINI. Happy to share my data as always)

The protests in Ireland are not about just fuel! They are about the distance between Ireland on this graph and every other modern and developed economy. Ireland is second wealthiest but gets waaaaay less than any other country for that wealth. By a golden mile. That visual gap in this graph? That’s what people are protesting. It’s a lack of infrastructure and the everyday enshittification of services, the economy, and the additional difficulty of trying to live, relative to peers in any other country. It also highlights why people don’t get uniformly listened to! - because there is no government architecture to engage meaningfully across this huge gap. That gap is a three hour drive to work in traffic, a 14 month wait for an MRI, buses that don’t arrive, trains that don’t exist, schools that have no places for your kids, houses that are unaffordable, pubs that close before midnight, €12 sandwiches, expensive fuel. People feel this gap, even if they can’t explain it precisely. And that builds into resentment, and ultimately protest. Fuel just happened to be the next thing that could be pointed to, today.

@SineadOS1 Would need to see that in full detail to be honest. No doubt Ireland has significant services and infrastructure deficits but this seems more extreme than other indicators. Cumulative effect could be important of course etc.

Seán- aggregation across core health, transport, infra sectors with metrics such as hospital beds per capita (Eurostat), rail km per capita (EC/UNECE), rail electrification % (EC), GP density (OECD Health at a Glance), and public capital investment as % of national income (CSO/Eurostat)… all normalized to 0–100, equally weighted, then plotted against GDP per capita.
