We hear this from many MPs - but we don't see animal welfare prioritised commensurately by governments in the UK. Our report by @SteveMcCVet breaks down a lot of polling data and considers the democratic deficit for animals politicshome.com/ugc-1/1/51/0/P…

A Call For Scrutiny of the Veterinary Profession @SteveMcCVet “The veterinary profession wields significant influence over food systems, public health and farmed animal welfare. And yet, argues Steven McCulloch, it lacks any meaningful scrutiny. Far greater accountability is needed to protect animals, people and the planet” @CIWF_Global blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpol…

Ohio just restricted the use of gestation crates! New rules, in effect Jan 1, bar factory farms from permanently confining pigs to coffin-sized crates. This is a big win for Ohio's ~200,000 breeding sows, who will finally have the room to turn around and walk.

@Lewis_Bollard Same in UK. See Table 1 (page 4) summary key polls from my 2024 report in case of interest. Consistent supermajority report and citizens-governance gap. Exec summary outlines arguments for reform based on democratic principles and public opinion. politicshome.com/ugc-1/1/21/0/P…

Politicians are racing to protect family farms from the threat of "fake meat." But the bigger threat is "fake natural meat": factory-farmed junk labeled to look like it's pasture-raised. Where are the politicians protecting true family farms from this unfair competition?
Martin Gould@MartinVGould

Meat company Tyson has a "Open Prairie: Natural Meats" brand which you might assume means the animals are on an: "open prairie" in their "natural" environment But in Tyson's own FAQs...

Thank you to everyone who has shared my TED talk on factory farming! Thanks to you the talk hit 235K views in its first week online. Hopefully one small step in breaking the cone of silence that protects factory farming's horrors.

New expert-reviewed evidence reveals the psychological trauma hundreds of thousands of mother pigs endure inside UK factory farms each year. @SteveMcCVet, European Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare and Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, reviewed our findings and confirmed: pigs confined in farrowing crates are likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. These cages are so small the animals can't even turn around. They are not just physically cruel, they can cause deep, lasting psychological harm too. 📖 Read our full report on why these cruel cages must be banned. 🔗 ae.onl/GGeVKW #EndFactoryFarming #BanPigCrates #AnimalEquality #AnimalSentience #PTSDinAnimals #VeterinaryEthics #AnimalRights #FarrowingCrates #PigsDeserveBetter #EndTheCageAge

Shocking that the government’s first animal welfare policy is an amendment to legalise the practice of handling chickens by their legs. This is incompatible with the claim of “Labour will introduce the biggest boost for animal welfare in a generation” Handling chickens by their legs causes suffering, fear and injury and it’s currently banned. This law change would reverse vital protections for millions of animals. Urge your MP to oppose this now legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2025/776/…

When we advised the UK govt about 🐙🦑🦀🦞🦐 sentience in 2021, we also highlighted the worst welfare risks they face and how to address them. Not much has changed yet, so we've published an updated review (open access) with all the latest evidence: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

This is a good book: clear, accessible and well written. It's also helping me better understand why I'm not a conservative, despite liking all the pessimism about human nature and scepticism about reason stuff.

There are few cases where the disconnect between popular opinion and legal reality is so stark. 91% of Brits support the government improving on-farm welfare standards. Yet the UK government hasn't done so in over a decade. Time for popularism for farm animals!
