Sri Lanka: Thousands of families gathered in #Mullivaikkal in the North of Sri Lanka today to remember their loved ones lost to the bloody internal armed conflict 14 years ago. Many of those affected by the war continue to confront their losses on a daily basis, with no truth, justice, acceptable reparations or guarantees of non-recurrence for victims of the forcibly disappeared, those who were tortured or killed, and those who’ve lost property and livelihoods. Many @amnesty met today raised how there can be no genuine reconciliation without redressing serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. Domestic efforts have failed to address these issues and victims have no choice but to look to the international community for support. They flagged how there are fresh attempts by authorities to suppress their right to freedom of expression to remember and grieve their loved ones in various parts of the country, their freedom of peaceful assembly, their freedom of religious belief among other issues.
