RED WHISTLE! 🔴👋
Over the next few months, we'll be rolling out a new initiative for match officials throughout Wales. If you see a referee using a Red Whistle - this means they are either new to refereeing or under the age of 18!
Keep an eye out for the new Red Whistle initiative as we trial this concept at Mixed Ability level and at the Urdd 7s tournament later this month!

@jimmyfine89 @dafyddfrancis He’s entitled to pass, place or release the ball providing he does so immediately.
English

@dafyddfrancis Genuine question from a neutral. Players on the floor pop the ball up to team mates all the time after they’ve been tackled, before a ruck is formed. What is the difference? Can’t see how this is a penalty given he’s not placed the ball and there’s no ruck?

@dieworkwear And to add complexity, the then Prince of Wales is wearing a boating jacket, the correct term for a blazer tailored in the regimental style for a Household Division officer.
English

It is not a blazer. This confusion can be easily cleared up if you know the etymology for the term.
There are two stories for how the term blazer came about.
The first is that it derives from the vibrant red jackets worn by members of The Lady Margaret Boat Club, a rowing club of St John's College in Cambridge, England. It was said that these bright red jackets visually "blazed" along the blue waters.
The second is that comes from the Commander of the HMS Blazer, a British frigate, who scrambled to make his men look presentable for Queen Victoria's visit in 1837. The naval uniform at the time consisted of a navy double-breasted jacket, onto which the Commander affixed metal Royal Navy buttons.
Regardless of its true etymology, we can understand the blazer to be a tailored jacket made with metal buttons, historically decorated with some insignia showing belonging to some organization — military, school, sporting organization, club, etc. All blazers are sport coats, but not all sport coats are blazers.
The blazer is typically navy, although not always so. Members of rowing clubs often wear boldly striped blazers. You can also have tartan blazers (IMO, nice for the holiday season).
However, the original post does not show a blazer, as it's a tweed jacket with natural horn buttons. This sort of jacket derives from sport — such as those worn in the countryside while hunting pheasants. It would make no sense to wear brass buttons when trying to hide in the countryside. In the Netflix series The Crown, the Queen gently mocks Margaret Thatcher, who wore a bright blue dress for a hunt. Wearing a blazer while hunting would demonstrate the same ignorance.
Again, all blazers are sport coats. But not all sport coats are blazers. If you order a blazer from a traditional tailor, they will assume you're asking for a jacket with metal buttons. If you order a sport coat, they will ask you what type of buttons you want — horn, corozo, or mother of pearl, and in what color.

HB@hazzabutt
@dieworkwear Derek, it’s a Blazer. Why do Americans insist on calling separate jackets sport coat. 🤦♂️

Hell of a game. Thank you @LlanishenRFC1 @LlanishenMJs and @Aberdare_RFC for a superb cup final. Two great teams who were a pleasure to referee. Special shoutout to two excellent captains who did a highly professional job in a massive game for both sides.

Good to have @whs_cardiff @WhitchurchPE level one refs Jay and Evan with us at CAP this week. Both did a great job running touch for age grade finals and joined the full team for this year’s @CardiffRugbyCup U16 Cup Final. Nice one, lads.

@ogmorebyseakid @TonnaRFC @WRU_Community Point probably is that many do both: playing and officiating. Not usually “as opposed to.”
English

@TonnaRFC @WRU_Community Good luck Josh in your rugger career on the whistle. IMO though, I still find it strange when young folk want to officiate as opposed to playing. But hey! we're all different🤦♂️

Great to see a young referee making his way in the game in our fixture at Cefn Cribwr yesterday.
Very well done Josh Sealey. No ref, no game. @WRU_Community
