In February 1978, five young men from Yuba City, California later dubbed the “Yuba County Five” mysteriously disappeared after attending a college basketball game. Their car, still in working condition, was later discovered abandoned on a remote snow-covered mountain road, far off their expected route home. Months later, the grim truth emerged: four of the men had perished in the Sierra Nevada mountains. One was found dead inside a Forest Service trailer stocked with food and supplies he never used, apparently succumbing to starvation, while the bodies of three others were scattered in the woods nearby.

In 1978, five men left a basketball game and vanished. Their fully drivable car was found on a snowy mountain road. Months later, one starved in a cabin stocked with food, three lay scattered in the woods, and one was simply gone, leaving only his shoes.

The case became known as the Yuba County Five, involving five men with mild intellectual disabilities. Inside the cabin, Ted Weiher was discovered dead of starvation. This was despite canned food, a propane tank, matches, and heavy clothing being available inside. None of the supplies had been properly used. The bodies of Jack Huett, William Sterling, and Jack Madruga were found scattered miles apart in the forest, suggesting they became separated while wandering through deep snow in subfreezing temperatures. The fifth man, Gary Mathias, was never found. Only his tennis shoes were missing.
