If you can show me even one ethnic group in the entire Sahel that ties a turban this way using a cap as the base, forming the two“kunuwa”(ears), and with similar materials I’ll deactivate my account. This is the distinct Hausa style of turban, just as you have other unique styles

Why is it that the turban is worn by only the royal families, but among Tuareg,Fulbe,Toubou and other nomads of Africa, they’re worn by normal people?

@cobbaltt @gwoyeuromatzyh Merger of various middle chinese sounds including retroflex affricates, alveopalatal affricates, and retroflex stops. Before that, in old chinese, they were consonant clusters iirc

@gwoyeuromatzyh With strong labalisation before /u/ I can see how that may have happened. What's the origin of Standard Mandarin retroflex affricates?

its hard to say anything about "chinese pronunciation" bc the most uneducated westerner cant even conceive of how strange some accents sound. ive heard people pronounce 10 like the first syllable of Llewellyn

@gwoyeuromatzyh @cobbaltt I think actually that it keeps the distinction between original /s/(>/ɬ/) and /ɕ/(>/s/), so while 三 has /ɬ/, 上 has /s/, unlike cantonese where both have /s/

@cobbaltt Taishanese has /ɬ/ where Cantonese has /s/, and the Min variety spoken in Putian has it where the other Mins have /s/ youtu.be/rtLA83X3pTQ?si…
