My maternal grandparents came to NYC in the 1940's and raised 3 little girls in the projects of East New York. My dad came to NYC from Puerto Rico when he was 15 with his parents.
And even though their journey's were different, my parents met and were united in the fact that they had overcome obstacles and persevered with joy. A willingness to enjoy life. A willingness to fight. Both of my parents ended up being the first ones in their family to get a college education and then worked in NYC government creating opportunities for Latin people.
My parents grew up in a NYC that said it was illegal to display a PR flag. The American government used Puerto Rican women as test subjects for contraceptives that sterilized about a 1/3 of the them up until the 1970's. Our island was used as a military testing site that caused long lasting environmental damage and a rise in cancer with the locals. And so, so much more.
So for my parents, myself, and SO many other boricuas/latin people, to see tonight's performance was a collective emotional celebration declaring that we ARE loud, we ARE proud, we ARE fighters. An especially poignant message right now. We fight with dignity, community and celebration of our incredibly diverse diaspora.
Because, despite the world trying to force us to believe we don't deserve it, happiness and hope IS resistance.
