FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LUTHER “UNCLE LUKE” CAMPBELL RESPONDS TO DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ ENTERING CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 20 RACE BROWARD COUNTY, FL — Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s decision to run in Congressional District 20 is no different than what Republican governors and legislatures have done in states like Louisiana, Alabama, and Tennessee when it comes to disrespecting and weakening Black political representation. This moment is bigger than one politician. This is about whether Black people still have the right to determine leadership in historically Black districts or whether power and political ambition matter more than principle. The Broward County Black Caucus has spoken out against her potential candidacy. Black leaders throughout the community have spoken. Grassroots activists, clergy members, and residents throughout this district have made it clear: they do not want Debbie Wasserman Schultz running in Congressional District 20. She can run in Congressional District 22 or run against Jared Moskowitz in the district she represented politically. Instead, she made the calculated decision to enter a predominantly Black district because she believes white voters and Jewish voters will automatically support her over a Black candidate. That should offend every fair-minded person regardless of race or religion. This campaign is not against Jewish people. I have lifelong relationships with Jewish families and leaders throughout South Florida. This campaign is about right versus wrong and whether communities deserve respect. Debbie Wasserman Schultz represents the worst kind of political entitlement — power hungry, selfish, and politically greedy. For decades, Black voters have been expected to fall in line while establishment politicians use symbols and photo opportunities to pander to our community during election season. The fact that she sat in front of a Barack Obama picture while making her announcement tells you everything about how little respect she has for Black voters. The last Democratic President was Joe Biden, but once again they believe showing Barack Obama’s image is enough to emotionally manipulate Black voters into supporting political insiders. The people of Congressional District 20 are not stupid. They understand exactly what is happening. For over 35 years, I have invested directly into Black communities through youth programs, parks, education opportunities, jobs programs, sports, entertainment, and economic development. I didn’t show up when a congressional seat opened. I’ve been here doing the work my entire life. This race is about protecting Black political representation, protecting the voice of this community, and making sure political power stays with the people — not party insiders and political machines. Make sure you’re on the right side of history. This is a defining moment not only for Congressional District 20, but for Black history, for the Democratic Party, for the Jewish community, and for Black people around the world who are watching how we choose to move forward together. We cannot allow political ambition to divide communities that have stood together through struggle, progress, and history. This moment demands unity, respect, and courage — not division. Don’t let one politician tear apart the coalition and trust that generations fought to build. And from this point forward, maybe we should just call her Debbie DeSantis. I know Congressman Hastings is rolling over in his grave right now. But he can rest assured I’m going to fight this battle.
