@UrNewPepPep Yea, meta comics were hitting their stride late 90s, but I think now more than ever you see the internal tension of comics publishing being expressed by creators as a very explicit layer of commentary

B) 1996-2011 is what I’d call the “Cinematic Age” (comics using widescreen approach, greater frequency of event books)
C) 2011-now is maybe the “Idiosyncratic Age” (comics increasingly about comics and their self-referential nature in pop culture)

I love how it reframes Frank as making a Faustian pact to be with his mistress, war. This is why I find other Punisher runs where he attempts to reintegrate into civilian life more grotesque in a way: he was already damned at the end of his Nam tour
