One of those weirdo facts that doesn't really benefit any doomer narrative is that the three highest-military-service populations in the USA - a very standard metric for patriotism - are Black people, Southern white descendents of Confederates, and Native Americans. All in together now, I guess.
blue dog geosh@bluedoggeosh

The first casualty of the American Revolutionary War was a black man. People of my skin color are more American than any MAGAt LARPing as a patriot.

Was Reich always this buffoonish, or did Trump drive him over the edge? The most charitable interpretation is that he classifies any company sufficiently successful that it dominates the competition as a "monopoly," which makes his claim almost a tautology: One of the most common ways to be really successful economically is to build a really successful company. If so, so what?
Robert Reich@RBReich

There are basically 5 ways to accumulate a billion dollars: 1) Profiting from a monopoly 2) Insider-trading 3) Political payoffs 4) Fraud 5) Inheritance Don’t believe the self-made myth.

These movies appeal to a conservative sensibility, but they are not as politically rightwing as The Dark Knight Rises. In TDKR, the bad guys are inequality-obsessed leftists who seize power and initiate Reign of Terror style revolutionary justice against Gotham's upper class. Then it's revealed they are secretly Middle East terrorists! Ultimately, Batman—an aristocratic vigilante—joins with an army of police officers in a glorious counter-revolution against the terrorists. I'm actually surprised that the film (which I love, to be clear) isn't reviled by liberal Hollywood as fascist propaganda. Maybe everybody missed that it's quite reactionary...
HabitatFun@HabitatFun

@robbysoave It's not the most right wing studio film of all time, come on. Master and Commander? No Country for Old Men? The Best Years of Our Lives? Death Wish? How about the Bible epics from the 50s, like The Ten Commandments?

This might be the greatest photo of all time. Honestly, this should be hanging in the Louvre, or maybe one of the art museums in Buffalo. It’s a masterpiece!

Reports are circling that 2026 FIFA World Cup tickets sales have absolutely crashed due to all of the geopolitical events and fears around ICE in the US. Tickets that were expected to sell for thousands apiece are now being sold at $100 each.

@Hopperfan @wil_da_beast630 I will take your word for it. I would assume also for a long running tv show you have to have a lot more relationships to keep things interesting.

Think you can outrun a bison? you can't Think of a bison like a high-performance muscle car. To move a massive body at 35 mph in a split second, you need a massive amount of oxygen, fast. The bison’s wide, reinforced trachea allows for an incredible volume of air to reach the lungs with very little resistance. This "over-sized" airway is what allows bison to maintain high speeds for long distances and recover quickly after a sprint. While a predator might tire out, a bison’s "intake system" keeps their muscles oxygenated and ready for action. This photo shows the vast size difference between a cattle trachea (left) and bison trachea (right).

The United States is so toxic on the world stage right now that it can’t fill hotels or sell World Cup tickets. Let that land. FIFA projected $30.5 billion in economic impact from millions of international visitors. That demand never showed up. Hotels in Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia and San Francisco have slashed match-day rates by a third from their peak. FIFA has cancelled tens of thousands of reserved rooms across all 16 host cities. Some hotels report cancellation rates above 95%. The reasons aren’t hard to find. Anti-American sentiment. Fear of border crossings. The Iran war driving up oil prices and airfares. And tickets priced into the stratosphere, with finals seats hitting $10,990 a pop. Industry executives are now openly blaming the Trump administration for the shortfall. Tourism economists say the Iran war made an already bad sentiment problem worse. Empty stadiums are now a real possibility. It happened at the Club World Cup last summer. It could happen again, on American soil, at the biggest sporting event on the planet. The White House says this will be “the greatest World Cup ever.” The market disagrees. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

@AP4Liberty @mattforney Erm. I like those things, but he also did not really cut spending or the debt (in fact his spending had caused massive inflation) and has increased taxes unilaterally through silly and unpopular tariff action . It always a mixed bag for libertarians though.

@mattforney That's because American libertarians have been infected by the woke mind virus and are becoming nearly indistinguishable from the left; not only in performativeness but in policy argumentation.

@Riffraff3232 The term “smashburger” refers to smashing down the patty on a searing hot urban style grill so that it’s very crispy on the outside,

I never thought that I’d see a day where I would see a better salesman than the first guy that sold blind people sunglasses… But whoever started this smashburger craze… I don’t get… Hamburger meat is by definition and process automatically smashed… There’s nothing smashed about a Smashburger… yet folks are paying about two dollars a burger more just for the privilege of saying Smashburger

The first large organism on land, Prototaxites, lived 400 million years ago and grew up to 3ft wide and 26 ft tall. Until this year scientists thought it was was some type of fungus, but a 2026 science paper says it's likely "an entirely extinct eukaryotic lineage"!!

For all the prognosticators claiming that Swalwell will be expelled from Congress this week ... A motion to expel takes a 2/3 vote to pass. The Dems can block it if they want to -- they need 145 votes.
