The beginning of the end of Haller Park & Butterfly 🦋 Pavillion Bamburi Mombasa , I hope and pray I am wrong. @BamburiCement @paulakahumbu This development in Mombasa is deeply concerning. Reports indicating that frontline plots in Haller Park are being subdivided and offered for sale to the public represent a troubling departure from long-established land-use practices. This situation will undoubtedly alarm Dr. René Haller, Dr. Paula Kahumbu , and many others who have long been associated with environmental conservation and rehabilitation efforts in the region. Historically, Lafarge did not permit even a single kiosk to be erected along its perimeter wall, a policy that contributed significantly to the order, environmental integrity, and long-term sustainability evident in the area today. This disciplined approach to land management stands in stark contrast to the current reports. It is important to emphasize that this land was previously mined and, as a result, consists of deep excavated terrain that is unsuitable for human settlement, given its proximity to the water table. Recognizing these risks, Dr. René Haller and the original Bamburi team made a deliberate and commendable decision to rehabilitate the mined area rather than pursue short-term commercial gains. In my capacity as a corporate governance trainer, I frequently cite Haller Park and the Butterfly Pavilion as the “lungs of Mombasa,” exemplary outcomes of responsible and principled corporate social responsibility practices—principles that today fall squarely within the framework of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. If the current landowners are indeed responsible for this initiative, it reflects a serious lack of foresight. Not all assets should be commodified. Moreover, established land-use principles dictate that once mining activities have been exhausted, there is a clear duty to rehabilitate the affected land—a responsibility that Lafarge fulfilled with notable success. Kenya is far short of forest cover and Mombasa is worse. The indiscriminate subdivision and sale of such land is a deeply problematic practice and represents a significant departure from sound environmental stewardship. This is undoubtedly a poor decision, and one can only hope that the reports are inaccurate. Its clear that " Proti Maguta Maguta mindset " is at work here. Nevertheless, as always, I choose to remain an optimist. @A_S_Nassir @Environment_Ke @MombasaCountyKe @NemaKenya @smutoro @GreenBeltMovmnt @IsaacKalua

@IanECox Vertical concrete fins for sun shading! 😍 I remember a client getting angry at me for suggesting white coloured concrete vertical fins saying, "I don't want another Kenindia!" He wanted a full glass facade which wasn't feasible. The building ended up having aluminum panels.

I don’t think most Africans truly grasp how critical it is to fight for good governance, protect our resources, and make our own countries work. Other countries do not want you in theirs. That’s the uncomfortable truth. That’s why Trump can casually describe entire nations as “shitholes.” And whether we like it or not, many African countries do stink, not because we don’t shower🙄, but because of broken systems, corruption, and politics that serve the wealthy while abandoning everyone else. The same political class that preaches patriotism is often invested in endless conflict, instability and war, because chaos is profitable to them. These systems were never designed to serve ordinary citizens. And yet, many of us still believe the grass is greener elsewhere. This is the only home we have!!! They despise your skin, mock your culture, devalue your labor, and reduce you to nothing. And they will continue to do this until you make your own Home work. Let’s build Africa, if not for us, then for generations to come ✌️

@EricKigada @kinjeketile @MainaKaibere We have local expertise, and secondly we need to stop "beautifications" and do proper landscape planning along all our roads. Landscapes are not decorations but essential infrastructure.

@kinjeketile @MainaKaibere This is the sort of thing that Hosea used to do. He did do a few iterations of the beautification of Mombasa Rd. I haven't done some serious landscaping of late so I don't know who would do such a thing. There is local expertise. x.com/Arch_KE/status…

Seed sovereignty reigns in Kenya! Punitive sections of the seed and plant varieties act , have been declared UNCONSTITUTIONAL by the High Court in Machakos. Farmers are free to save, share, and exchange their indigenous seeds. One of my best work's ever for my country Kenya
