@FNFTNValley Thanks Ned! Mine had apparently not advanced to the point where it couldn't be reversed, fortunately for me.

@Wrap10 Amen, praise the Lord! I had sort of a similar situation. The hospitals always want to say it is congestive heart failure, although that is not always the case.

Two years ago today I was diagnosed with heart failure. I knew very little about it at the time and thought it was a death sentence. When I later met with my cardiologist for the first time and he told me he was confident they could actually reverse my heart failure, it was like a ray of sunlight breaking through black clouds. I had been adjusting to the idea that I would decline and die within a few years at most, and here this guy was telling me no, we can fix you up just fine. Two years, a stent procedure, some new meds and a few lifestyle changes later, I'm still here and doing well. Modern medicine and doctors who actually give a damn about their patients are twin godsends. I'm grateful to be benefiting from both.

The Ken Burns Civil War documentary is so good because you'll have very serious academic history interspersed with Shelby Foote (who sounds just like Foghorn Leghorn) saying something like "then we gave them Yankees a whuppin' "
Milk Vessel Pilot@trueliberal1848

this reminds me of the end of Ken Burn's Civil War documentary where he has this black "historian" waffle and ramble for 5 minutes about the legacy of the war and slavery, then it cuts to Shelby Foote reading a poignant letter from a Confederate veteran reminiscing about the war

Early 1960s — this is what a birthday party looked like. No one asked if the cake was gluten-free, organic, low-sugar, nut-free, or dairy-free. We ate it — and somehow survived. That's my mom (yes, her real hair color). All these years later, the one constant: I still like cake on this day.

@redsteeze That's unfair. I mean not the 'racist' part, but the insinuation anyone in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, or Mississippi has ever thought about hockey

The point about the assaults being Grant's worst decision is the war is debatable. I think he said in his memoirs that he regretted the May 22nd assault, or at least the second attempt on that day. Personally I think it was a good risk following so close on the heels of his success in outwitting Pemberton and Johnson. Certainly the first attempt, on the 19th. It was also in keeping with his aggressive nature. Had he not tried it, historians would likely wonder why not, and if it could have avoided a siege. 🤷‍♂️

On this day in 1863, Ulysses S. Grant made the worst tactical decision of his career. In the previous 18 days, his army had marched 130 miles, won five battles, captured a state capital, and chased the Confederates into the river fortress of Vicksburg. His men were exhausted. They were also convinced they were unstoppable. Grant agreed with them. So at 2pm on a Tuesday, he ordered a frontal assault on one of the most heavily fortified positions in North America. Sherman's corps led it. The 13th US Infantry actually planted its colors on the Confederate parapet. They could not get a single man over it. In roughly half an hour, Grant lost 942 men. Confederate losses were around 200. Three days later, having learned absolutely nothing, he tried it again with three full corps. He lost another 3,200 men in a few hours. Only then did he sit down and start a siege. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4th, 47 days later, the same week Lee was retreating from Gettysburg. Lincoln wrote that "the Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea." The Confederacy was cut in half. And it started with the worst decision Grant ever made.

We need to clarify how many men Grant "lost" in the two assaults, as the terminology gets confusing. The figures cited represent total casualties - the total number that were either killed, wounded, or listed as captured or missing. The total number of men killed for the two assaults combined was about 640 men. Still high, but nowhere near 4,000, which is roughly the total casualties involved. It might seem a minor point, but it's an important distinction.

From what agency, Brian? Where's the record? And where's his service record from the war? How did he serve as a five year old? With a pop gun? We can't change the fact that there's no record of him from the war. He wouldn't be the first person to lie about such a thing. Today it's called Stolen Valor. No community notes necessary.

107 year old Civil War veteran visiting an Air Force base, 1955. In one life has seen so much it must have been in comprehensible. This is why I have curated and saved 100s of 1000s of media from our great past. His context is more vital than ever in the Age Or Amnesia.

He was paid benefits from Florida as a claimed Confederate veteran, not a a U.S. Government agency. A photo opp doesn't constitute proof that he served in the war. Other folks have pointed out the Census record shows him born in 1859, and that there's no record of his war service despite his claim. That's why those "clueless historians" dispute that claim. They're going by what the record actually shows. Anyone can make a claim, but if there's literally no evidence to support it - and also evidence that refutes it - we can believe either the claim or the evidence. But not both.

@Wrap10 Perry, that would be inviting him to the base and recognizing him. The video is from… the pentagon. Oh he also was paid CIVIL WAR BENEFITS. So there is that… but debate it if you like.
