@Xyc0

I promise I only talk about Mastodon when Twitter is on fire. That just happens to be always.

ProTip for new #Mastodon users, Don't stress too much about finding the perfect first instance. If your account name of choice is taken then find another instance where it isn't. Multiple accounts is normal but eventually you will find a home on the fediverse.

@NerdShinobi @RayRedacted here's a tangential anecdote. someone I knew was very concerned about a "Chinese" owned market maker. this was before the citadel stuff so the idea of market makers was new to most people. China was in our money before you or I was born. They'll still be there after we die.

Harsh reality: TikTok is malware running on the devices of over 100 million Americans right now. It is time to shut it down.

@Xyc0 @RayRedacted I see what you mean now I think and this is my objection: PLA threatening a company in the US like FB is NOT the same as threatening a company in China which they could literally force to stop doing business, or legally disappear the CEO.

@NerdShinobi @RayRedacted because 3pla is their intelligence. they can absolutely force Facebook and Twitter to do exactly what they want. PRC has publicly threatened them for exactly these purposes.

@Xyc0 @RayRedacted You're missing the fact that they can't simply demand the handover of internal data from those companies. Or perhaps it's me who is misunderstanding you.

@NerdShinobi @RayRedacted how did my statement miss any of this. Facebook and Twitter and just as valuable to the PLA, if not more because of the kind of data posted rather than generated.

@Xyc0 @RayRedacted You have a point except for one particular thing that most people keep missing: Chinese companies are fully subject to "open, handover, unlock on demand" for the CCP. That is a striking difference. Those other apps are equally terrible sure, but.... (1/2)

@RayRedacted The worst part is that some folks think it's nothing but Sinophobia to say so. Of course, the fact that NOBODY should trust the Chinese gov't isn't any kind of racial/ethnic phobia, but it muddies the waters.

Over 1 million people have joined Mastodon since October 27. Between that and those who returned to their old accounts, the number of active users has risen to over 1.6 million today, which, for context, is over 3 times what it was just about two weeks ago!

I’m witnessing the top minds of our generation here struggle with the concept of more than one website on the internet.

Now would be a good time to log out of Twitter for a couple weeks.

Bob: So, how do I find people to follow on Mastodon? Ed: It's decentralised. Use the right instance! Bob: Ok, it's not a monolith. How do I find the right instance? Ed: You ask people on Twitter! Bob: Did you just tell me to go fuck myself? Ed: I believe I did, Bob.

@Xyc0 @hankgreen Auto Hidden tweets are from accounts that are suspiciously not a real a person, often no verified E-mail and a low follower count When you reach some magical threshold, your tweets start being seen - its supposed to prevent bots

The thing about Instagram, YouTube, and especially TikTok is that you only ever see the most-upvoted responses to what you create. While on Twitter, you can easily see them all rolling in. This causes us all to give way more weight to unpopular opinions than we should.
