The real scandal here has been going on for decades and (as far as I've seen) hasn't been written about. The right question isn't "how did private equity manage to squeeze the fire truck industry?", but rather "why is the fire truck industry such a lucrative target for PE?" Almost all fire departments spec out each truck as a one-off custom project (a fun perk for firefighters). NYC's are standardized and a fraction of the cost. Firetruck manufacturers produce these awesome catalogs that allow local fire departments to pick from thousands of configuration options and custom accessories. Getting to spec out the new truck is a months-long game that results in a $1m+ dream machine, paid for by taxpayers.
