There are childhood disappointments that never leave you. Not the big dramatic ones, but those small, quiet heartbreaks that taught you early that life does not always cooperate. One of the most painful was being sent to the neighbour’s house to collect milk, only to be told, “Ng’ombe ilinyonyesha.” In those days, milk was not simply bought, it was understood. We called it “kuandika maziwa.” There was no written book, but everyone knew accounts were running. At the end of the month, balances would be settled like a serious business. Milk itself was measured in cups, and two cups proudly made a “chupa.” That was the standard. That was what determined whether tea would have respect or just be hot water with ambition. So when you were sent with a sufuria, you didn’t go as a beggar. You went as a representative of a system. That milk had already been “written.” You walked with confidence, already imagining the neighbour pouring two full cups, maybe even adding a little extra if the relationship was strong. You reach, you greet properly, you state your mission. For a moment, everything feels certain. Then comes that pause. That dangerous pause. The neighbour looks at you, then at the sufuria, and then calmly says, “Ng’ombe ilinyonyesha.” Just like that, your entire plan collapses. You stand there confused. How can something already “written” simply disappear? You try a small negotiation, maybe ask if even one cup is possible, just to salvage dignity. But the decision has already been made. There is none. The journey back home is different. Slower. Heavier. The sufuria now feels louder than usual, like it is announcing failure to everyone on the road. You start rehearsing your explanation, hoping it will sound convincing enough to save you. But when you arrive and present the empty sufuria, the truth comes out plainly, “Wamesema ng’ombe ilinyonyesha.” It never sounds strong enough. It always feels like you should have done more, even though there was nothing you could do. That evening, tea suffers. It becomes black, weak, or disappears completely. And somehow, you carry the blame like you personally negotiated with the cow and lost. Looking back now, it is actually funny. That whole system of kuandika maziwa, of measuring life in cups and chupa, worked most of the time. But every once in a while, reality would remind you that not everything goes as planned. Because sometimes in life, you show up with your sufuria, your confidence, and your rightful claim… only to find the cow has already been milked.

I am very saddened by the loss of Ol Kalou MP, Hon David Njuguna Kiaraho. My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and the people of Ol Kalou as they go through this painful moment. He was a kind and devoted leader who truly cared for his people, and he will be remembered for his efforts in improving education and serving in Parliament. His life teaches us that leadership is about service, not politics, and may his “Kazi Kwanza, Siasa Baadaye” legacy continue to guide us.

The government has awarded a Sh2.47 billion contract for the construction of the Rumuruti–Nanyuki road, marking a significant step in improving infrastructure in Laikipia County. The project is expected to enhance connectivity between Laikipia and neighboring regions including Meru County, Isiolo County, Marsabit County, Samburu County, and Nyeri County. Once completed, the road is anticipated to ease the movement of goods and people, unlock agricultural potential, boost tourism, and attract new investments, positioning the region as a key economic corridor in central and northern Kenya.
