On November 10, 2025, the Myanmar military junta filed charges against the Assistance Association for Myanmar-based Independent Journalists (AAMIJ)—a media organization operated by Myanmar journalists in exile and inside the country—accusing it of violating the Election Protection Law. The charges stem from a report the group published on November 6, alleging that an election candidate was involved in illegal drug trafficking. Maung Seinn Maung, the news editor at AAMIJ, told Fortify Rights:   “The reason given was for allegedly obstructing the campaigning of a Union Solidarity and Development Party candidate. … No matter how much the military sues or threatens the AAMIJ, we will continue to uncover the truth and write news to ensure the public is aware of human rights violations and to uphold freedom of expression and the press.” #WhatsHappeninglnMyanmar

🇲🇲 The Myanmar junta is using its new “Election Protection Law” to silence and intimidate critics ahead of its sham votes on December 28 and January 11. “The junta is using its new bogus law as a weapon to silence anyone advocating for freedom and democracy,” said @john_hq3, Director at @FortifyRights. “These so-called elections are nothing more than an authoritarian performance and will deepen Myanmar’s problems.” Governments should refuse to legitimize the junta’s staged elections and strengthen support for Myanmar’s democratic movement. #BREAKING: Myint Swe, the acting president appointed by #Myanmar's military junta, has died at age 74, state media reported Thursday. A former general, Myint Swe was a key figure in the 2021 coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. He had served as vice president during Suu Kyi's government term from 2016 to 2021. Myint Swe was widely accused of playing a leading role in the violent crackdown on the 2007 Saffron Revolution, when he served as commander of the Yangon region. The military's brutal suppression of the monk-led protests resulted in dozens of deaths and disappearances.

🗣️ AAMIJ spoke to @NikkeiAsia on #Myanmar: "Laws enacted recently, such as the ... cyber law, are clearly designed to further suppress the public and the media," said Nay Myo, an editor at the Assistance Association for Myanmar-based Independent Journalists, which operates outside the country. "In addition, the military's propaganda lobbyists are threatening journalists working abroad for a variety of reasons," he added. "The military takes no action against these threats, demonstrating that, despite claims of change, oppression persists." #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar #PressFreedom
