Joint Statement: As fuel protests grip the country, Odipo Dev and Amnesty International Kenya have released the Kenya Freedom Index. The Kenya Freedom Index is the first public platform that empirically tracks violations of the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. Analysing 1,002 protests from 2020 to 2025, the Kenya Freedom Index paints a stark picture. Read more: amnestykenya.org/kenya-freedom-…

This week on #AmnestyReads, Irungu Houghton reminds us that accountability season is here. A Senate scandal, falling public trust, and shifting political strongholds all point to one thing: young people are watching and ready to act. Public office is a trust that must be answered for. ED @irunguhoughton remarks at the launch of @DefendersKE #SaferToDefend 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. Long live Defenders Coalition! At a time when human rights defenders continue to face increasing risks and restrictions, your steadfast commitment to protection, solidarity, and justice remains both essential and inspiring. Your work ensures that those who courageously stand for rights and dignity are never not alone. We celebrate this important milestone. The future of peoples power and the Kingdom of social justice is not in PBOs. We have our role to play. The future of Article 1 is multi generational, multi class, multi gender and sexually diverse. It is distributive and powered by ordinary people. The last eight years have been the most impactful personally and institutionally. Much of this human rights impact could not have been possible without this Haki village. We are eternally grateful. On Madaraka Day, Freedom Day, Amnesty International Kenya will have a new leader. Page one of my handover notes to my successor, will be a simple sentence “Amnesty International and Defenders Coalition must continue to speak truth to power and defend human rights for all including OCS.” I give my personal pledge to continue resourcing, mentoring and directly acting for social justice. No retirement until our constitution breathes without the life support of HRDs. Long live Haki Village In solidarity always!

Over 4,800 people have already signed the petition demanding accountability over the humiliation of a Grade 10 student in the Kenyan Senate. Today, some of the protesters(145), arrested during the recent fuel hike demonstrations, were arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts before Hon. Dr. V. Wakumile. The protesters were previously arrested and held at Embakasi, Central, and Kasarani Police Stations in Nairobi. Representing the Law Society of Kenya in court were: @LeviMunyeri (Lead Counsel), Abner Mango, Hon. @HEBabuOwino_ , Ian Mutiso, Richard Mwaniki, and Hiram Munene. The protesters faced charges of obstructing the operations of vehicles on the road, contrary to Section 58(c) of the Road Act. Through the representation of our advocates, all the 145 were released on a cash bail of Kshs. 5,000, except for one minor who was granted a personal bond for the same amount. The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) is facilitating payment of the bail to secure their release. Mention dates have been set for 2nd and 4th June 2026. The LSK reiterated its commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights and ensuring access to justice for all.

#PressStatement TI-Kenya, together with the members of the Police Reforms Working Group and the Law Society of Kenya, condemn the arbitrary arrest, detention and hospitalization of Nairobi Central Station Police Commander, Chief Inspector Dishen Angoya, following his lawful decision to release sixty-four protesters on police bond yesterday. The power to grant police bond is grounded in Kenya's legal and constitutional framework. Criminalising the exercise of this discretion undermines the rule of law. It chills professional judgment within the police service and signals unlawful interference in operational independence. Reports that the arrest was carried out on "orders from above" heighten concerns about politicised policing and command #PoliceReforms #HumanRights #RuleOfLaw #Kenya

A team of Advocates including @gloria_kimani and @Benign_Overlord have been following up on the arrest and detention of Nairobi Central Police Station OCS, Chief Inspector Dishen Angoya. The team has ascertained that he is still under arrest but is recovering steadily after seeking medical attention. All clarifications on the circumstances leading to his arrest have been recorded in his statement and we anticipate this matter will soon be resolved to its logical and just conclusion. We await his arraignment in Court and will ensure he is properly represented.
