Our Chief Executive Anna-Maria Arabia OAM spoke to ABC Radio National Breakfast to discuss the need for a more science-aware justice system in Australia. Reflecting on the case of Kathleen Folbigg, Anna-Maria spoke of how the science sector can improve the way they communicate science and how the courts can improve the way that they apply and interpret science. We’re proud to share that four Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science have been elected to the @RoyalSociety—one of the highest honours in science. Among this distinguished group is Professor Chennupati Jagadish, President of the Academy, who has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) for his outstanding leadership in science policy and his pioneering work in semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology. His impact extends from mentoring young researchers to national and international science strategy. “There is a long history of collaboration between the Academy and the Royal Society. It is a particular honour for me to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society while serving as the President of our Academy.” — Academy President Professor Chennupati Jagadish AC Joining him are: • Professor Melissa Little (@MCRI_for_kids and @reNEW_global) – recognised for her international leadership in stem cell science and renal regeneration. • Professor Bill Laurance (@jcu) – honoured for groundbreaking work on the ecological impacts of tropical forest degradation. – Professor Hugh Possingham (@UQScience) – celebrated for contributions to ecological modelling and applying it to real-world conservation challenges. We offer our warmest congratulations to Prime Minister Albanese on his re-election. The Australian Academy of Science looks forward to continuing to provide independent, evidence-based science advice to help shape policies that benefit all Australians. To do that we draw on the expertise of 600+ leading Australian scientists in our Fellowship and our extensive domestic and international scientific network. The Albanese Government have shown their commitment to reforming the R&D system by commissioning the Strategic Examination of R&D. Re-designing our R&D system to boost productivity, diversify the economy, and create jobs is critical to building Australia’s future. Let’s do it. 📸 Academy President Prof Chennupati Jagadish AC and Anna-Maria Arabia OAM meeting with The Hon Anthony Albanese in 2022. @AustralianLabor @ScienceGovAu

Science is helping build the defence systems of the future—like the ‘Ghost Shark’, a new underwater drone designed to patrol Australia’s oceans, gather intelligence, and spot threats before they reach us. There is a lot said during an election campaign – and much of it highlights why science matters. Using techniques like remote sensing, scientists detect mineral signatures under Australia’s surface—clues to discovering minerals like lithium or rare earth elements—without digging. Not only does this make exploration more efficient, there’s far less environmental damage. And it fuels our economy. @australianlabor @liberalaus @greens #scienceonthecampaigntrail #researchanddevelopment

Australian science brought you solar panels that power homes across Australia and keep electricity prices down. Now Australian science has revolutionised battery technology with Zinc-bromide batteries that are perfect for harsh climates in regional Australia. Even better: they can be recycled. #scienceonthecampaigntrail #ResearchAndDevelopment @AustralianLabor @LiberalAus @Greens @AlboMP @PeterDutton_MP

It’s not luck that Australia has one of the strongest biosecurity systems globally.  Australian science is reducing the threat of pests and diseases that damage our economy and way of life. This election, we're explaining how politicians' campaign remarks highlight the importance of science and research—even when they may not realise it. #scienceonthecampaigntrail #ResearchAndDevelopment @AustralianLabor @LiberalAus @Greens

Australia must act now to safeguard its national strategic R&D capability. The Academy calls for an emergency meeting of the National Science & Technology Council to strategically and systematically assess the risk of US interventions on national R&D capability. A wait-and-see approach is not an option. Learn more: science.org.au/news-and-event… #AusPol #SciencePolicy

The Academy urges the Australian Government to urgently address US authorities surveying local scientists about their institutions’ alignment with US policies. Up to AUD386 million in research funding is at risk if responses to the survey lead to reductions or cessation of US–Australian scientific collaborations. This jeopardises Australia’s strategic edge in defence, health, AI, and disaster response. The government must act now to protect our scientific future and Australians’ safety, health and quality of life. Read our full statement: science.org.au/news-and-event…
