@ambkcsingh Yea. This is a bizarre obsession. Why is the Modi govt fixated on taking over Race Club & Gymkhana when there’s no security issue and no shortage of space for offices? This is just shallow chest-thumping dressed up as “anti-elitism”.

@SurajRai0889 @LtGenDPPandey Return to people for what? A 100 yr old club for sports and recreation needs to shut down so that Modi Govt can indulge in shallow chest-thumping and फूल people about being anti elite? Yes, it's administrator and membership policies were pathetic but dismantling it is no remedy

This will hurt many. Will cause crisis. A rare bold move by Centre to challenge hold of those who run the government.

DELHI GYMKHANA CLUB. THE LAST VESTIGE OF COLONIAL INDIA AND THE REDOUBT OF BABALOG (LUTYENS) PRIVILEGE, NEPOTISM IS NOW GOING TO BE CLAIMED BY THE CENTRE. Centre Moves to Take Back Delhi Gymkhana Club Land, Cites Defence and Public Security Needs In a significant move, the Central Government has ordered the re-entry and resumption of the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises located at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, stating that the land is required for urgent public and strategic purposes. The order was issued on May 22, 2026, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Land & Development Office (L&DO). The government stated that the property, spread across 27.3 acres, lies in a highly sensitive and strategic area of the national capital and is now needed for strengthening defence infrastructure, public security arrangements, governance infrastructure, and other public-interest projects. According to the communication, the premises had originally been leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., now known as Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., for the purpose of maintaining a social and sporting club. The Delhi Gymkhana Club is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India. The club shifted to its present location in 1913 and was then known as the “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club”, with Spencer Harcourt Butler serving as its first President. After India attained Independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped and the institution came to be known simply as the Delhi Gymkhana Club. The club traces its origins to July 1913. In its early years, the Polo Club functioned as part of the Gymkhana Club before becoming a separate entity in the 1930s after shifting to New Delhi. Historical records relating to the club’s origins are limited, and systematic documentation of its history is understood to have begun only around 1927. Referring to Clause 4 of the lease deed, the Centre noted that the lessor has the authority to re-enter the premises if the land is required for a public purpose. Exercising those powers, the President of India, acting through the L&DO, has determined the lease and ordered immediate re-entry of the property. The order further states that the entire land parcel, along with all buildings, structures, lawns and fittings standing on it, shall vest absolutely with the President of India through the Land & Development Office. The Land & Development Office is scheduled to take over the premises on June 5, 2026. The Delhi Gymkhana Club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession of the property on the said date, failing which possession would be taken in accordance with law. The communication was signed by Deputy Land & Development Officer Suchit Goyal and issued with the approval of the competent authority.

Central Government’s move on Delhi Gymkhana Club is not merely an administrative decision. It is a long-overdue correction of Delhi’s most entitled drawing-room ecosystem. My family lived for nearly 27 to 30 years right opposite the Gymkhana Club, at the Government bungalow, 4 Safdarjung Lane. My late father Shrikant Verma and my late mother Veena Verma were both Members of Parliament, and yet neither they nor I ever found this sick place worthy of becoming members. That itself says enough. For decades, such spaces functioned like private republics of inherited privilege, where surnames mattered more than merit, access was treated like ancestry, and public land became the comfort zone of a self-appointed elite. The so-called “elitist club culture” slowly became a museum of nepotism, colonial hangover and social gatekeeping. The same people who lecture India on democracy suddenly panic when privilege is asked to vacate the lawn. National interest must always stand above cocktail entitlement. Delhi does not belong to closed circles, legacy surnames and old-boy networks. It belongs to the Republic of India. Well done, Central Government. Some clubs needed reform. Some needed eviction. This one clearly needed both.

In my personal capacity, I support the GOI's decision. It was a valuable, strategically located piece of Indian public land, but was used by only a few selected people. It was not accessible to the common masses. Yes, the Gymkhana's managing body or trust can buy land of a similar size and continue their exclusive celebrations in private gardens. Buy not at all at the expense of the valuable assets of Indian citizens. Many such places in various Indian cities carry British elitist culture, which shall reach the same conclusions. GOI need to bring in a special Act to end this culture once and for all.

Gymkhana Club has always been accessible only to the affluent. Therefore, it is neither memorable nor historic for the common public. You are a retired senior IPS officer, so you had access to its “heritage” and now wish to preserve it. But ask any commoner otherwise.

This is unfortunate. It is truly tragic. ( Hope the proposal is reconsidered) @arunjaitley got a new pool constructed during his life time. Some of the finest tennis matches have been played here. This is earth shattering news. For those who do not know, the Delhi Gymkhana Club is the most premium club of India, having many powerful people as members. They will not give in easily. The club was known as “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club” in the times of Gora sahibs. When the Brown sahibs took over, they renamed it “Delhi Gymkhana Club”.

Any institute or a club funded or supported by government can’t be allowed restrictive and selective use of its facilities. Delhi Gymkhana, Golf Clubs etc all over the country run on free or subsidised huge land parcels provided by the babus ,for the babus and their cohorts only. Others have to wait for memberships till their grand children are born. Now they are paid well, let them join privately run clubs where they can outreach their contacts for networking. @PMO, @narendramodi @AmitShah @IASassociation @BureaucratsInd

The Modi government just can’t remain out of news cycle. Notice to @DelhiGymkhana is such a provocative move that entire Lyuten’s folks will be furious. The elitism of the Gymkhana can be judged by the fact that the waiting period to get its membership is 25 plus years. Some of those top sarkari babus working in the PMO and in the ministry of Housing and Urban affairs, that issued the notice, may be members of Gymkhana. Only in this government Netas can make the Babus work against their own favourite recreation club. We have rarely seen any government disturbing such elite clubs. Normally, the governments, using laws and its clauses, order demolition of Garib Nagars as it’s happening in Mumbai, currently. Certainly, this bold intent to take over 27 plus acres of land of Gymkhana enjoyed by the current and former powerful groups of ruling class is offbeat. This move will not be opposed by Aam janta, It will take time before the Gymkhana loses land. In land of Mahabharat nobody surrenders land without prolonged litigation. However, knowing the Modi government’s ongoing plans, to build modern offices of the Union ministries and central institutions around India Gate and in its surrounding areas, it’s not difficult to imagine some ministries bland buildings or some public park erected on this land within 10-12 years. The government camp will argue why should merely 1200 plus elites continue enjoying exclusive privileges, almost for free, when the government is facing acute shortage of land for administration? The club doesn’t own the land. Such club can operate in any corner of NCR but the union government offices are required to operate near other existing office clusters. It will be better @DelhiGymkhana surrenders the land. Aap ka time gaya! People should force the government to do great landscaping and transform 27 acres of Gymkhana land into a beautiful green park. The takeover of Delhi Gymkhana club by the centre needs to be looked at closely. In reality , the functioning of the club has been under scrutiny for sometime. Many battles have been going on over the last few years within the committee members. Unless you are someone of someone, question of membership doesn’t arise. But since you would know many people in that “someone “ category, many would end up using it. In fact @narendramodi himself has attended two wedding functions I can think of at the gymkhana lawns. The club had lost its real power sometime back. For intellectual hangout’s, Delhi gymkhana had ceased to exist as that place. Nice bar, cheap food drinks , cheaper comfortable rooms to stay. At least two cabinet ministers in the past have used the gymkhana club rooms to stay over longer periods. So why the takeover now? Because perhaps someone of someone wasn’t being accommodated for membership. At its heart, that would be the major problem. Though I anticipate another court battle coming up on Monday against this decision.
