The Union Urban Affairs Ministry’s Land & Development Office (L&DO) just ordered the Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over its massive 27.3-acre prime property by June 5, 2026. The reason? The government is reclaiming the ultra-strategic land—located right next to the Prime Minister’s residence on Lok Kalyan Marg—to "strengthen and secure defense infrastructure" and for vital governance needs.

The Imperial Beginnings (1913–1947)
The club owes its existence to King George V’s surprise announcement at the 1911 Delhi Durbar that the capital of British India would move from Calcutta to Delhi.

In the 1930s, the club moved to its current location. It was designed by Robert T. Russell the legendary British architect behind Connaught Place and Teen Murti House. He envisioned a majestic, spartan structure with sprawling green lawns to complement the surrounding bungalows. The club initially lacked a swimming pool. Lady Willingdon (the Viceroy’s wife) hated traveling to the homes of wealthy Indians just to swim, so she personally gifted ₹21,000 to construct the club's pool. To this day, it features the "Lady Willingdon Swimming Bath" plaque.

When India gained Independence in 1947, "Imperial" was dropped from the name, but the exclusivity remained entirely intact.
For decades, Gymkhana was the ultimate informal mixing ground for top-tier Indian Civil Services (ICS/IAS) officers, military top brass, diplomats, and old-money elites. Becoming a member was a multigenerational saga. The waiting list for non-government applicants regularly stretched past 30 to 35 years, making a membership card one of the most coveted status symbols in the country.
From its grass tennis courts (some of the best in the country) to its strict dress codes and its legendary roast mutton sandwiches, the club was a time capsule of old-world charm surviving in modern Delhi.

The path to the June 2026 eviction notice didn't happen overnight. The club has been locked in intense legal and administrative battles for years.
Following allegations of financial mismanagement, nepotism, and operating like a private fiefdom, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs moved the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). In 2021-2022, the government officially took over the club’s management, replacing the elected committee with a government-appointed administrator.
Recently, the Delhi High Court upheld the termination of controversial "Green Cards" (a system that allowed children of members preferential access), signaling a tightening leash on hereditary privileges. On May 22, 2026, the L&DO officially determined the lease and ordered immediate re-entry.
