Death, Faith, and the meaning of Life This past Sunday, my mother-in-law, at the age of 90, went to be with the Lord. As culture states since Monday evening, we are having a vigil (Ikiriyo), pastors have been preaching words of comfort to family and friends, speaking about grief, pain, and loss. As i listened, one question kept coming to mind; why do many pastors speak about death as though it is entirely tragic, yet faith teaches us that earthly life is temporary and eternal life awaits believers? Perhaps the contradiction is not as simple as it first appears. Faith teaches us that life is not permanent ownership, but a divine trust. We are only stewards of the time, relationships, opportunities, and responsibilities entrusted to us by God. Life is a test of character, obedience, compassion, and purpose; a temporary assignment whose true measure is not wealth, status, or longevity, but how faithfully we fulfilled what was placed in our hands. No matter how powerful, wealthy, educated, or respected someone becomes, every human being eventually reaches the same destination. Death, therefore, is not an interruption of life’s journey; it is part of the journey itself. Yet even with faith, human beings still grieve. The Bible itself records moments of sorrow and tears in the face of death. The pain people feel when they lose a parent, spouse, child, or friend does not necessarily reflect a lack of faith. More often, it reflects the depth of love they shared. Pastors preach comfort because funerals are attended not only by the spiritually prepared, but also by the emotionally wounded. At the same time, perhaps religious leaders need to speak more openly and honestly about mortality. Many believers grow up hearing about heaven, eternal peace and the temporary nature of earthly life, yet when death comes, communities sometimes respond as though something unnatural has happened. Death is painful, yes, but it is also inevitable. A life that reaches 90 years is not a tragedy; it is a testimony of longevity, wisdom, experience and grace. Perhaps the role of faith is neither to deny grief nor to celebrate death carelessly, but to help people hold two truths at the same time: that separation hurts, and that life on earth was never meant to be permanent. Funerals should remind us not only to mourn those who have departed, but also to reflect on how we ourselves are living. If life is truly a trust and a temporary assignment, then the real question is not simply how long we live, but whether we lived with purpose, dignity, compassion, and faithfulness. As Paul says in Second Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” May her soul rest in eternal peace 🕊️

Rwanda has two intertwined issues: low quality of education and high rates of unemployment. Why can't policy-makers devise another home-grown solution instead of importing teachers for basic education?
