A TON OF THINGS HAPPENED IN THE STOCK MARKET TODAY.
Here's a full recap:
1. $TSLA Tesla continues to get upgrades on Wall Street. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas has increased his $TSLA price target to $400 (up from $310) while maintaining a BUY rating. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard has raised his $TSLA price target to $365 (previously $255), citing growing optimism about Robotaxis. Additionally, Tesla has resumed its search for showroom spaces in India, exploring locations with DLF for experience centers and service operations, as the country considers lowering EV import taxes to attract automakers, according to Reuters.
2. General Motors $GM has halted funding of its Robotaxi development by Cruise and is now ending their pursuit of the Robotaxi business. GM CEO Mary Barra said today: "Cruise was well on its way to a Robotaxi business, but when you look at the fact that you're deploying a fleet, you're maintaining a fleet, there's a whole operations piece of doing that; The cost of that, it's not our core business."
3. The NASDAQ-100 $QQQ rebalancing, set for Friday, December 13, is expected to include these changes per Bloomberg Intelligence: Additions: Palantir $PLTR, MicroStrategy $MSTR, Equinix $EQIX, and Axon Enterprise $AXON. Removals: Super Micro Computer $SMCI, ARM Holdings $ARM, Moderna $MRNA, and Illumina $ILMN.
4. The Consumer Price Index will release tomorrow at 8:30AM EST. Major banks project November U.S. CPI YoY estimates to range between 2.6% and 2.8%, with most forecasts projecting 2.7%. Current odds for a December rate cut are 85%. Last CPI report the categories of shelter, used cars and trucks, airline fares, medical care, and recreation were all higher.
5. $GOOGL Google was up 5% today after news about it's new Quantum computer, Willow, being one of the best quantum computers to ever exist. Investors were excited that $GOOGL, a company that was seen to be behind on the AI revolution, was now first at doing something that may not have any commercial applications yet but was able to reinstall confidence that Google is innovating behind the scenes and preparing for the next leg of their growth. As a result of this quantum news, other quantum computing stocks gained momentum, with Rigetti Computing $RGTI going up 45% on the day. $RGTI is down 22% all time since going public.
6. GameStop $GME reported Q3 2024 financial results: Net sales were $860 million, down from $1.078 billion in the prior year's Q3, while SG&A expenses were $282 million, slightly lower than $296.5 million last year. The company posted a net income of $17.4 million, compared to a $3.1 million net loss in the prior year's Q3. Cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities totaled $4.616 billion at quarter-end. GameStop completed an "at-the-market" equity offering in September, raising approximately $400 million by selling 20 million shares. The company does not anticipate further such offerings in the current fiscal year. No conference call was held. $GME was up 3% after hours.
7. Jacob Helberg, a senior advisor to $PLTR Palantir CEO Alex Karp, got nominated to be the next “Under Secretary of State,” which is a senior official in the U.S. Department of State, serving directly under the Secretary of State. These people are responsible for overseeing specific areas of U.S. foreign policy, diplomacy, and administrative functions.
8. Amazon is testing a 15-minute delivery service in India. From Bloomberg: Amazon $AMZN will begin testing a rapid delivery service in India this month. Amazon plans to experiment with the new initiative in some areas of Bangalore, as a potential precursor to a broader rollout." As someone who visited India last month, there are native products like Blinkit that will deliver products within 10-15 minutes. The growing consumer population in India is giving rise to companies that have over 1B people to serve, so Amazon is likely seeing a massive market opportunity if they can continue to compete against the native companies inside the country. India is currently growing GDP at 7% per year, one of the fastest paces in the world.
9. Sam Altman wrote this about $HOOD Robinhood today when posting a picture of his gold credit card: "a few months ago robinhood sent me a gold credit card with extremely high-quality details. i thought it was a ridiculous marketing stunt at the time but now it’s an example i give when talking about great design." Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev responded with: "thanks, o1 is pretty nice also".
10. SpaceX has officially received a $350B valuation. Bloomberg reported: “SpaceX and its investors have agreed to purchase as much as $1.25B of the company’s common shares at $185 apiece in a transaction valuing Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite maker at about $350 billion." In October of 2021, the company was worth $100B, now more than tripling it's valuation in 3 years. With a valuation of $350 billion, SpaceX has become the most valuable private company in the world, surpassing the market caps of major corporations such as Salesforce $CRM ($333B), Chevron $CVX ($279B), Coca-Cola $KO ($271B) and Toyota $TM ($230B). Elon Musk's net worth has reached a record $442 billion due to the new valuation of SpaceX, making him the first person ever to exceed $400 billion.
11. $AMD AMD's Lisa Su was named the TIME CEO of the Year due to AMD's innovation in AI, her leadership and the company's financial performance.
12. Microsoft $MSFT shareholders have voted against the proposal to put $BTC Bitcoin on their balance sheet. $TSLA Tesla remains the only Mag 7 company with $BTC on their balance sheet, now worth over $1B. Amazon $AMZN will be voting on a proposal to put $BTC on their balance sheet in the next weeks. Publicly traded Bitcoin mine announced they bought 11,774 Bitcoin for $1.1B with the money they raised from their convertible notes.
