Keep a close eye on the UNLV job opening. There’s a lot more intrigue there than people realize. Vegas gives you weather, access to talent, transfer portal appeal, and growing NIL potential. The right coach could turn that place into a real problem in a short amount of time. Around the game, plenty of folks believe that program’s capable of a lot more than it’s shown. If and when the chair opens, there’ll be serious interest.

Big congratulations to Christ Hart on landing the NC State job. That’s one of the better chairs in college baseball, and it takes a certain kind of baseball man to follow a legend like Elliott Avent. New chapter in Raleigh. Plenty of eyes will be on it.

Call me old-fashioned, but this new ABS setup in the Southeastern Conference Tournament just don’t feel right. Part of college baseball’s always been the feel of the game. The catcher stealing a strike, the umpire finding his zone, hitters adjusting inning to inning. Now every other close pitch has folks tapping helmets and staring at a screen. Maybe it’s the future, but to some of us old heads, it feels like the game’s losing a little of its soul.

Word drifting through the tobacco roads of Carolina. There’s a feeling this could be the last ride for Elliott Avent at NC State Wolfpack baseball. Nothing official, but old baseball men have started talking like the sunset might be coming into view. And if it is, that’s the end of a mighty long chapter in Raleigh. Won a lot of ballgames, built that place into a respected outfit, and did it with grit more than glamour. College baseball’s changing fast, but Avent’s always felt cut from an older cloth.

Word making its way through the back channels. If the dominoes fall the way folks expect down at South Carolina, the smart money’s on Kevin Schnall. Too many trails seem to meet at the same crossroads there. And if that wagon hits a rut, sounds like Fitzgerald could be the fallback hand. Either way, don’t think this one stays quiet much longer.

That’s the part that’ll keep old baseball men up at night. Folks think of LSU and they expect power arms, strike throwers, and clean mound work. A lot of talk on position players and transfers underperforming this spring. Barry Bonds could have been in that lineup and they still would have been in trouble. Finishing dead last in that many pitching categories in Southeastern Conference? That ain’t just a cold stretch, that’s a full season problem. Hard to win big when you’re handing out free bags and playing from behind all night.
