@ThisMomSaid We all have stories where people were totally rude, wrong and out of line for things they said or the way they treated us. I just let it go. Who cares? They aren’t the gospel. They are people who make mistakes and maybe they’re jerks. I don’t blame the church. I blame them.

I don’t share this publicly for sympathy or to bash… but in hopes that perspective is perhaps seen in a different light. I was the only girl my age, in Young Women’s. My little sister had 6-8 girls in her class. I was often alone on Sundays in class. I had a boyfriend. I wore makeup. I enjoyed taking time to look good. My dad enforced modesty, and I valued my own chastity… but that didn’t save me from what I experienced at church by my leaders. I was told I was a “slut” because I had a boyfriend. Right in front of my sister’s entire class. Because at 17 years old, I shouldn’t have a boyfriend. I wanted to literally crawl in a hole and die that day. It got worse though. My parents went to Mexico for a week… we lived on private property where our only neighbors were my grandparents and uncle and aunt. They too were in Mexico. So my sister and I felt comfortable being at home by ourselves. She was in a towel, I was in boxers and a sports bra, eating cereal. When my YW leader came in my front door. Terrified I screamed! She said “I was just making sure you weren’t whoring around”. I told her to get the hell off my property or I’d call the police. Needless to say, that was the last time I went to Young Women’s. I started going to Gospel Doctrine and Relief Society with my mom. My cousin left the church completely. My sister struggled with it till adulthood. Why am I sharing this? Because this morning I woke up from a night full of nightmares reliving those days. Being told I’m “annoying” for telling people to stop judging others. Standing up for women who are doing what appears to be their best, to help others on their path, while reading nonstop comments on how they’re not good enough. You never know what is actually happening in anyone’s heart. You don’t know anyone’s intentions. You don’t know where people are… and that is why we are told repeatedly to STOP JUDGING. Allow people grace and space. We are not their judge. We are commanded to love one another… so please… as someone who knows firsthand what judgement from members can do… I beg you to stop.

Imagine a voting bloc, associated by religion,sending adherents out to trash a conservative Christian for making distinctions between 2 different doctrines, while calling themselves the same party and faith of the candidate they are attacking. It was people like Mark Fitzpatrick who burned our homes to the ground and murdered innocent men, women, and children in mid-1800’s Missouri. It was people like him who created Idaho’s original constitution, which barred Latter-Day Saints from voting or holding public office.

I vote for Christians all the time and will continue to do so. I will not vote for a guy who, rather than mourning the victims of a terrorist attack, instead wants to make sure everyone knows that said victims “aren’t Christian”.
