Bowen is an absolute club legend. He’s carried this club for a number of years and always given his utmost. However, recently he’s ain’t it, both with lack of goals and overall performances.
He is also nowhere near captain material for me. Any playing can wear the armband but it takes a leader to well, lead. The saying is that every player should be a leader, but in life that just isn’t the case. Some players lead vocally, so by example and others just through their meer presence. I’m not sure if the pressure is weighing down on him but the incident with Paqueta’s sending off highlighted just what he’s lacking as a captain, especially when you consider Liverpool’s own keeper tried to calm him down.
Bowen is, if you like, the face of the club. He’s the first player people think of when they think of West Ham these days and this is through merit, he’s been our best, most consistent player since he signed. But at some point, if performances continue to dwindle, one might think he’s being played purely by default, and that isn’t good for him or the team.
This is a man who’s s hoping to play in the upcoming World Cup, now whilst it’s highly unlikely to start any games what with the competition for places in his position, if his form didn’t pick up from its current state, would he deserve a place on the plane?
For me, I’m a bit fed up with him, I’ll be honest. I’ve possibly been spoilt by how good he’s been over the years that a few iffy games and I’m chucking him on the skip might seem a little harsh but he’s the clubs poster boy, the captain, Mr. Reliable and Danny Dyer’s hero but something’s up and unless he finds a spark from somewhere it’ll feel like he’s buffering screen and we’re all trying to find the refresh button.
The was a moment today when he was running at Van Dijk, 1-on-1, and quite frankly it was a painful watch. 1 or 2 seasons ago he’d have skinned him and left him in the dust then either got a shot away or set up a team mate. This time he looked like man low on confidence hoping someone else was available to pass to and relieve himself of the pressure, sad to see.
This isn’t a hate article, far from it. It’s simply a fan that is seeing that something isn’t working and needs to change. Take the arm band off him, bench him for a game, try something different. My solution you ask? Try the £30m kid who hasn’t been given a proper chance yet.
Yes he’s had a couple starts, cone off the bench multiple times and never really done anything, but the kid is raw, he’s a sponge that needs consistency. He’s got quick feet, pace and an urge to go forward everytime he gets the ball. He’s made a fantastic run through the Liverpool midfield in the second half and had Fullkrug been switched on he could’ve put him through with a neat 1-2 for Guilherme to possibly have a shot on goal. That didn’t come to fruition but what it did show is that young Luis has something about him, something that can be nurtured and potentially blossom for a team that is desperate for it.
Just my opinion. More than willing to be told I’m talking out of my backside but I’ve seen where there could be room for change and where there is potential.
In conclusion: bench Bowen, start Guilherme. 👍🏻
