Took our first Bitcoin payment through the @Square terminal, customer payed using their @Strike wallet on L2. The payment was faster than using the @Visa network and it didn’t cost us 3.5%+ .20¢ transaction fee to sell a $7 latte. Well done @jack and @jackmallers

I understand how it works, I run multiple bitcoin / lightning nodes, having the transactions happen off chain is a feature, not a flaw. The internet scaled in layers, the same thing bitcoin is doing.

You really don’t understand how L1s and L2s work, do you? Your analogy doesn’t work. A physical dollar is the base asset. Lightning isn’t the Bitcoin base layer; it’s a separate network that uses locked BTC to create off chain IOUs. Those transactions never touch the blockchain, aren’t mined, and don’t use Bitcoin’s PoW for validation; it actively avoids it. That's why it’s fast and cheap because miners and energy aren’t involved. If it did, it would have a hash rate. They’re only anchored to Bitcoin when a channel opens or closes. Everything in between bypasses the network entirely. And no trustless form of money in history has “scaled in layers.” It always breaks the very property that made it sound in the first place. Gold didn’t, cash didn’t, and Bitcoin won’t either if it abandons the layer that actually gives it value.
