Imagine thinking every other person you talked to is going to burn in Hell forever. Friends. Loved ones. I don't think they truly believe it themselves. Not if they believe God is just and loving. Not if they believe in Christ's mission and the power of His Atonement.

Who's gonna tell him that I don't care to be included in the Protestant definition of Christian? In the Bible covenant followers are called Saints.

On this day in 1863, Ulysses S. Grant made the worst tactical decision of his career. In the previous 18 days, his army had marched 130 miles, won five battles, captured a state capital, and chased the Confederates into the river fortress of Vicksburg. His men were exhausted. They were also convinced they were unstoppable. Grant agreed with them. So at 2pm on a Tuesday, he ordered a frontal assault on one of the most heavily fortified positions in North America. Sherman's corps led it. The 13th US Infantry actually planted its colors on the Confederate parapet. They could not get a single man over it. In roughly half an hour, Grant lost 942 men. Confederate losses were around 200. Three days later, having learned absolutely nothing, he tried it again with three full corps. He lost another 3,200 men in a few hours. Only then did he sit down and start a siege. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4th, 47 days later, the same week Lee was retreating from Gettysburg. Lincoln wrote that "the Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea." The Confederacy was cut in half. And it started with the worst decision Grant ever made.
