If I win the entire 80 million in tonight's Lottomax (Dec 19) I will buy 20 of you whatever vehicle you want and give $5 million to Barrhaven Food Cupboard & 10 million to the The Ottawa Cancer Foundation! @aaronhoyland When we got our flu and Covid shots this week, there were 2 babies and 1 4 yr old also getting their shots and none of them made a peep! So brave ❤️

@HAnneH20 @heatherrobin2 @KashPrime @CTVNews Same question! We have Metformin in the house. What would be timing and dosage?

Had the chance to speak on @CTVNews on how to approach the news of the new variants that are beginning to circulate.
Some highlights:
1) Should we worry? We don't know how well our immunity (from vaccines/boosters and prior infection) will hold up. New data today from @yunlong_cao indicates that there might be significant evasion of our antibodies, but also that it could be less efficient at spreading. Time will tell.

We also have T-cell mediated immunity, but this is not entirely reliable (and even harmful) for those older than 50-60 (see: x.com/kashprime/stat…)
2) When will we know if its going to badly? The real test will be when schools reopen next week in most of Canada. If we start to see a significant impact on hospitals, it will be 1-2 weeks later. Remember, had we systematically upgraded the ventilation in our schools and workplaces, a lot of these concerns would be moot now. If schools close again (as they have in multiple (Red) US states this week), it will be because we collectively failed to take proper precautions for an airborne pathogen. x.com/dickzoutman/st…
3) What about masks? They've become a bit of a politicized issue, and they remain for many a painful reminder of darker days behind us. But they are still useful especially in high risk settings when waves like this happen; be strategic; they can dramatically lower your risk in high risk crowded indoor settings like buses, trains, crowded shops, workplaces, classrooms, medical waiting rooms full of coughing people, etc. I always keep one in my pocket just in case.
4) Will new boosters work? We don't know yet, the new booster is based on XBB1.5, which is distinct from the new BA2.86, which is also distinct from the original vaccine from 2 years ago, or the booster from last year (based on BA.1 and BA.5). I will still be getting mine when they are (hopefully) available in two weeks, since I'm almost a year out from my last booster.

5) What can I do to prepare? Unfortunately you have to create your own situational awareness, since public health agencies are far less ... candid in publishing statistics or giving advice these days. If you see many in your community or workplace getting sick, or see lots of your kids classmates going down with illness, that's your cue to be more cautious. If you have vulnerable/high risk people in your family, you might want to take precautions even earlier.
6) What if I get sick? Keep some rapid tests handy. Wear a mask, stay home, try to avoid spreading it to others. Leave isolation when rapid tests are negative. The antiviral Paxlovid is available at pharmacies in Ontario (and many US states) without needing a doctors prescription, and need to be taken within 5 days of symptoms to work. Paxlovid, taken in high risk individuals, can reduce the odds of hospitalization (and death) by 90%. Metformin, a cheaply available drug used for diabetes, can lower your risk of developing Long Covid, a potentially devastating condition with no known treatment, that affects a significant number of those that recover.

@just_shannon_s @JBradshaw01 All this! Plus I love that I can respond talk to text on the go as when I’m walking is always when my kids are texting me! 🤣 I am surprised by how much I love it.

#COVID19 smart people - my daughter is still testing positive (very dark line) on day 6 after first testing positive but hasn't had any symptoms since day 2 (and even then very mild symptoms) - do no symptoms and + RAT still = isolation? #CovidIsNotOver
