@IyanaJonesRees2 This is so strong for a sense of summer and graduation, with the foliage and her posture. It is like a new beginning almost - from hard work

I chose this portrait from Kehinde Wiley because it shows a strong black woman who looks sure of herself. As we come closer to graduation, it just reminds me of what I want to represent for my siblings and black girls coming after me #arth287artoninsta instagram.com/p/CS4yx-WL6UA/

@salty_tarheel I feel like that is a great connection to summer and nostalgia! I haven't had that specific experience but the pieces do ring summer to me as well, which is very interesting!

@adiarth287 I think this analysis is very rich and insightful! I agree that it seems like the subject is following a straight and narrow before exploding into a rigid and dynamic uncertainty, much like many of us graduating

Maya Freelon’s piece makes me ponder graduation as it pictorially represents the emotional complexity of this moment. We’ve barreled towards this goal for so long on this straight line path just to be thrust into this unmetered, scary, yet enthralling world. #arth287artoninsta

to preservation of self but also representation for others - whether it be back at home in Nigeria or other Nigerian Americans. It also allows for people who have always been separated from a homeland via diaspora to get a look at a home they've never been to 2/2

Njideka Akunyili Crosby's imagery and work relating to post-colonialism but also life in the United States as an immigrant and trying to make imagery that's familiar to her, her culture, her life back home, her home country, etc., is so critical 1/2 #ARTH287

I chose this piece by Beverly McIver because it reminds me of some of the depression/uncertainty surrounding post-graduation and a summer of shifting life. The desaturated tones of the face relate to that feeling but they're still exciting which relates #arth287artoninsta

I chose this mural by Saya Woolfalk for a piece that represents graduation in a physical and literal sense as the composition has several forms of graduation in color and size of shapes, but also in the feeling of graduation as beautiful, huge, and vibrant. #arth287artoninsta

So many of the artists we looked at made work about trauma and violence, which is interesting as art often immortalizes what's depicted. It can show community hurt but as in a more humanizing light #arth287

@Makayla9032 @kehindewileyart The one on the left with the pastel blue reminds me of Easter as a kid. I love your interpretation of the emergence of something new

I chose these pieces by @kehindewileyart because I felt that they represented spring with their use of brighter colors and flowers. I thought they both symbolized the emergence of something new, which is kind of similar to how I think of spring. #arth287artoninsta

Beverly McIver’s piece reminds me of the warmth you feel through the window for the first time in a long time when the time change happens and you can wake up from sunlight rather than the darkness of winter and daylight savings #arth287artoninsta

Genevieve Giagnard’s piece reminds me of spring because of the familiarity in the pattern of the wallpaper. The imagery reminds me of a Spring Sunday in grandma’s kitchen, filled with conversations of strength and resistance #arth287artoninsta

Carrie Mae Weems posted about her show 'Down Here Below'. The photos that she shows of the installations have a fantastic and eery tension to them. I feel as though the show relates to the unseen/unheard or "ghostly" plights with injustice and identity. #arth287artoninsta

Glenn Ligon post about NY Historical Society Museum and Library's exhibition on Black Dolls from the artist Deborah Roberts. The dolls are all in a power stance, defending themselves against the harsh realities of stereotypes, racism, and beauty standards #arth287artoninsta

@arth287superfan but on the other hand, there's a risk of desensitizing the public to violence on Black people, as they become used to seeing these images. Not to mention, it will always harm Black ppl more to see these images of their own than anyone else, even empathetic supporters 2/2 #arth287

I was disturbed when I saw the postcard picture of the lynch mob around their victim. I recognize the value in the use of sculpture to protest lynchings, but I think actual documentation of the events could have been more impactful #arth287

@arth287superfan I think this brings up an interesting conversation about how to represent these things. On the one hand, yes, seeing the actual images of these bodies can be more impactful because it forces you to confront the issues, leaving nothing to the imagination 1/ #arth287

Meta Warrick Fuller immortalizes her with the sculpture, allowing her protest to outlive the evil and vile beings that took her life. 2/2 #arth287

The un-victimization of Mary Turner with Fuller's artwork is such a magnificent form of protest. Reading of her death disturbed me but also infuriated me. She met such a horribly violent end and the perpetrators lived on anonymously as do their descendants. 1/ #arth287

@arth287superfan It's interesting to think of in relation to racist violence as "crime infested" communities are often seen as the fault of the people who live in them, rather than the fault of the racist and systemic oppressions placed upon them

This piece is striking to me. It points out the "warzone" circumstances black kids are exposed to from poor/crime infested communities #arth287artoninsta

@adityasenthil18 I love Dread Scott but I feel like the first piece isn't as eye-opening as it is humorous when considering the message. It would read as more satirical since it's just an averagely dressed white man standing comfortably on a box

Dread Scott's "A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday" flag speaks to the NAACP's "A Man Was Lynched Yesterday" flag. This addresses racialized violence at a direct source. It a call out directing accountability to police instagram.com/p/CZ1oQDes8Nl/… #ARTH287artoninsta
