Before labeling someone as racist, it’s important to understand the context. The darkened faces in that eps were not meant to imitate or mock black people. The game was adapted from the Daur peoples traditional “Smearing Black Festival”(抹黑节) where soot is applied as a symbol of good luck and blessings.
During this tradition, people smear soot or ash on each others faces as a symbol of driving away bad luck and wishing for peace, prosperity, and good fortune in the coming year. It is a cultural practice with a positive meaning not a racial one.
Because the show was filmed in an area closely connected to Daur culture, the production team adapted this tradition into a variety show game. Everyone participated equally and the purpose was entertainment and cultural introduction not mocking, stereotyping, or portraying any racial group.
It's completely fine to discuss cultural sensitivity but accusing someone of racism without watching the episode or understanding the cultural background risks misrepresenting what actually happened. If we're going to make serious accusations, it's only fair to look at the full context first rather than judging from a single image
