I improved the Wikipedia article about Jacquie Sturm (one of NZ’s finest writers) from being a stub to being officially classed as a Good Article. This is a little thing but makes me happy. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacquie_S…

@MHReddell Unless I'm missing something, MBIE officials did address conflicts before his appointment (Elevation Capital and Saturn - KC report says Stobo had to resign these). He was appointed director of Independent Mortgage Company in August 2024, several months later.
English

Good final outcome but a) why did it take 5 mths and b) while it reflects poorly on Stobo it is equally bad for the (former) minister and MBIE when the initial appointment was made without clearing away conflicts etc first. Also, his inappropriate…

@adamtalvarez @DicconHyatt Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy (and anything else by Lynley Dodd); The Little Yellow Digger; the Gruffalo (and anything else by Julia Donaldson); Peepo; Each Peach Pear Plum - the favourites in our house!
English

@DicconHyatt I would pay money for a LIST of children's book with good rhyme and meter. Seuss is an obvious pick, but we've found some other gems off the beaten path. Is anyone doing this?

@namwalien This is a template warning message which appears on an article to inform users of problems with it. Similar messages exist for articles with promotional content, articles without references, articles about non-notable things.

There's no way they can manage this now. Guess I'm done donating to Wikipedia, which I mistook for the last bastion of human-generated knowledge online. I presume they got millions from their recent AI deals anyway. I wonder if there'll be a new entry on the "Selling out" page.

Didn't know this was a thing now on Wikipedia.

@foxcar_joey I have a toddler, and am very grateful that pre-baby me had the foresight to overrule my husband's love of the many Wellington houses up or down steep steps

@EricCrampton I have some sympathy for the writers; I love The Godwits Fly. I think it deserves to be more widely known and read these days. But... Hyde's words should be her legacy, not an old building.

The writers could be invited to buy the site from its owners at a price its owners are willing to accept, or, alternatively, to go to hell.

We went from “what good are the humanities?” to “suddenly, no one can read” in about a year, and it's no coincidence that we're suddenly awash in misinformation and lack of critical thinking. This is WHY we need the humanities. This is what they prevent.

“What are you reading at University?” has become “Are you reading at University?”

@CherryTruthy @HormoneHangover As someone with one difficult baby who still wants another baby, thank you for the hope!
English

@HormoneHangover Can confirm, had a difficult baby and then an easy baby. The difference is astronomical. I really mean it, one was almost relaxing, the other by far the most stressful experience of my life.

@MattNippert At least we r getting a new stadium aucklanders need one but they think too much about the cost of it so they will never get one n will just waste money on patching up eden park sometimes u just have 2 bite the bullet n spend that kind of money on it

@EricCrampton I think it's also worth emphasising a subtle point: any decision will apply to *this particular brand of large marshmallows*. In each case you have to look at the "basket of evidence": how the product is designed, marketed, consumed, etc.
English
This is what happens when you create GST exemptions.
The court has to decide on whether marshmallows are an ingredient or a snack.
At least I think that's the demarcation.
It's so dumb.
Emma@chocmilk
Update: this case has gone to the Court of Appeal. There will now be a fourth hearing on this matter to decide whether these large marshmallows are "normally eaten with the fingers". @EricCrampton

@nguvi_ @_chase_____ Having recently had a baby and being around lots of other new mums with babies this is 100% BS. Some babies are just colicky and more sensitive. I'm a highly anxious mum and my baby is super chill 🤷♀️

Here's to the 384 women (inc. me!) who are named on the new Ribbons sculpture in Leeds! For anyone wondering, it's a 'weird but nice' feeling I guess? & I ofc have a strong sense of who isn't there, which shows how much more work there is to do, but for now, nice
